Tried to pin more details on this today, but I could not because people don’t like talking about things that are unfinished.

Nevertheless, WVU and Penn State will renew their football series in few years. A two-year, home-and-home series is being completed, though the sites and dates are not yet determined and we could be waiting a while for an announcement.

Still, the remaining problems are somewhat solved. They know where they’ll play and they know the game will open the season. The way future schedules are settling for both teams, it’s going to be hard to get this thing together, but at least they have an agreement. I’ve heard 2020 as a start date, even with Penn State already having Syracuse scheduled, but if that’s it, then it might have to be split. WVU plays Virginia Tech at home in 2021 and in Blacksburg, Va., in 2022.

I’m not sure WVU wants to play have a schedule with Virginia Tech and Penn State in the same season, much as I’m not sure Penn State wants Syracuse and WVU once Big Twhatever teams go to a nine-game schedule in 2016. Based on all the things we’ve heard in the past as it related to Big 12 scheduling, WVU would rather string these series together and not play more than one BCS opponent in a single year.

But that may change. For all we know, the strength of a non-conference schedule could be a big part of the playoff formula, which might encourage a schedule with nine Big 12 games, plus Penn State and Virginia Tech — and we haven’t even mentioned Pitt.

If you don’t think that thing’s getting done soon for some time around the Penn State and Virginia Tech series, I don’t know what to tell you.

(I clicked “publish” a few minutes ago, but the more I think about this Virginia Tech-Penn State [-Pitt?] conundrum, the more I think it isn’t a conundrum at all. All that talk this week about Division IV in the future makes me wonder if you’re going to see a schedule with all BCS teams — and 2020 or 2021 or wherever you want to start this concept is a long time from now.

So, in theory, a schedule with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, Penn State, Virginia Tech and Pitt might be absurd today, but … sheesh … normal nine years years from now. So, yeah, maybe disregard everything before these last two paragraphs. A lot can and will change, especially if these commissioners get the change they want.)
