That whole matter of trying to win the Big 12 while winning over new and old fans with class and kindness now in the rear view mirror, Randy Mazey can pull himself from the 2013 season and begin to look ahead. Most major matters that concern the future concern the unnamed baseball stadium that will rest atop the University Town Center.

We’re nowhere near seeing shovels in the ground yet, but the process starts in earnest today when Mazey and a host of others meet for the first time to discuss the design.

Obviously, Mazey has been thinking this through for a while. He and Oliver Luck took a clandestine tour last week of ballparks to study and emulate. The baseball coach, whose opinion will be solicited and weighted, will recite some of his ideas and aims, knowing quite well not all of them will be accepted.

He’s not saying where he and Luck visited and he won’t reveal too much from his wish list, obviously, but he believes a stadium should be symmetrical and neither inherently unfair nor advantageous. He’d like it to be similar to many of the parks he admires most, but he wants to have features visitors will notice upon arrival and remember when they leave.

And no doubt most revealingly, Mazey wants it to be there for the fans.

“One thing in college stadiums is that people seem to enjoy watching the game on the outfield fence,” Mazey said. “I know some parks around the country I’ve been to have a tailgating area behind the outfield fence. Some have party decks. That’s the kind of thing for college kids to watch the game. You want it to be a place people want to come to.”
