The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Do call it a comeback, for now

Did not see this one coming, but it’s happening. Today. The start of summer classes.

Ivan McCartney, who quit in November, has been granted a second chance by Dana Holgorsen. So here comes Sticks in what seems to be about as clear a low risk, whatever reward arrangement that you’ll find.

“Second chances are few and far between,” Holgorsen said. “This kid’s got an opportunity to right the ship. Maybe he makes the best of it. Maybe he doesn’t.”

So …

Could help. Could hurt. WVU needs receivers. WVU doesn’t need McCartney pulling another selfish stunt.

He’ll come in and start a new, no different than anyone else showing up in the summer and residing on the bottom rung. He’d better behave that way, or it will come to an end again and this time not on his terms.

I’d imagine WVU would have no trouble shutting him down if he started acting up this summer or this fall. I mean, Jordan Thompson has never been a bad egg, but that kid can’t get a compliment and he’s sheltered until he does something the coaches believe is worth discussing.

Expect McCartney to be similarly sequestered, which means no chance to tell his story and share his tale of redemption. And, in this case, that probably makes sense. Letting him face the crowd and give the obvious and cliche answers to the obvious and cliche questions risks letting the reaction to the headlines and the quotes and the highlights go to his head — and you know people would be falling  over themselves to praise his maturity and humility and all that.

That’s not good for anyone and especially McCartney in this situation.

He’s never been a trouble-maker. Overhyped, underwhelming, oversensitive? Probably. He didn’t take criticism well last year when Shannon Dawson really went after him on a few occasions (whereas it seems like Thompson has accepted the challenge). So if everyone can manage the situation better this time, it can work.

Not saying it will work. There are reasons to believe it can — he can play — but there are reasons to suspect it won’t. Remember, he wigged out last summer, too.

If he can stay tucked in this time, it can be good for him and for the offense. If not, he’s done and probably before he’s been able to spoil his surroundings with a poor attitude.

I just think it’s important to remember that he was welcomed back. Guys quit and then want to come back all the time. Happens everywhere. McCartney was one of three who split during and after the 2012 season. But that he’s back probably ought to speak to a certain level of respect to reconciliation.

His people reached out, WVU considered it and laid out expectations and demands and here we are. I also think McCartney may stand to benefit from being away from Geno Smith and Stedman Bailey.

Really, what good did they do for him before?

I’m not saying his former high school teammates were negligent or didn’t do enough to steer McCartney the right way. I’m saying they were exploding and getting tons of attention and that I suspect McCartnety had designs on the same attention.

And for half of the 2011 season, it worked.  Then he dipped the second half of that season and, for whatever reason, was an academic uncertainty last fall before falling off and later walking away.

Now it’s just McCartney and what has to be a stirring reality he has only one season to play and one person to trust.
