I’m sure this will turn into a big story, because it’s May 1 and where else is the ink going to go, but I’m torn on this one. So I’m hesitant to project much when we talk about resetting the quarterback derby at WVU.

That said …

I know Dana Holgorsen likes to keep things very simple. This, one could argue, complicates things. What’s more opposite of simple than essentially starting over the quarterback competition? In a way, isn’t the first day of preseason practice akin to the first day of spring practice?

Then again, what’s more complicated than having an unsettling quarterback situation? I can’t imagine Mr. Trickett is wanted unless he’s needed. And capable of starting. So we have to think he is both.

And we have to consider the side effects now. Trickett can play two seasons — smart kid, by the way, who graduated in three years … so do not assume learning a new playbook in 12 weeks is impossible — and he’ll spend two seasons here. That will likely come at the expense of someone else in that meeting room. You don’t keep four and then welcome William Crest next year.

The true value: WVU may have finally found a voice on offense. No one else on that side of Holgorsen’s three-sided ball has the experience Trickett does. By what I’ve heard about the kid, he’s not afraid to use it. Who do you think is getting in someone’s face: Curtis Feigt, Pat Eger, Quinton Spain or Trickett?
