Text from a peer over the weekend, after Geno Smith had been drafted and ironed out that messy situation hastened by his departure Friday night (Aside: The spin on that one is the Smith Camp doesn’t know where the report that he was leaving came from … though ESPN reported Geno told Suzy Kolber he was going home.)

Tebo & Geno. Jets have 2 guys who think they’re the Second Coming. Only 1 max can be right!

That’s obviously not true. The Jets waived Tebow today.

So the initial reaction to being drafted by the Jets is only slightly less severe now. There are just four other quarterbacks to compete with, but let’s qualify that. The number of quarterbacks, be it six before or five now, is fun for conversational and reporting purposes. In reality, there are three: Geno, Mark Sanchez and David Garrard. And Sanchez might not be long for life in West Hempstead.

Seeing as if the Jets couldn’t trade Tebow and that so much money is due to Sanchez, the team might be trying to get something, or anything, for him as opposed to just letting him go. Either way, it might be just Geno and Garrard before long.

It remains a bad situation for Geno, whether Sanchez remains or goes, and the irony of ironies is that he literally can’t leave New York. And there are challenges there. The stadium can be cold and windy. The division is manageable, but  features two games against Doug Marrone, and the games outside the conference are not easy: at Falcons, Steelers, Saints, at Ravens. And the roster is absent the kind of offensive talent Geno has always worked with, be it in high school or college.

Good news? Seven of the eight home games and three of the eight road games start at 1 p.m. and basically a ninth home game at Miami.

I don’t need to tell you there are some red flags in the super critical NYC market and with a weak supporting cast, but here’s an opportunity, too: He has a chance there that he otherwise might not have. He’s about to be presented with the sort of things so many people have said he cannot handle. He can change all the perceptions in a quick and thorough manner by simply playing football the way he feels he’s capable of playing.
