Good thing the draft is tomorrow. Otherwise, what I’m about to show you would be used as fodder to pick away at Geno Smith as he readies for the NFL.

I mean, the guy really struggled during a flag football game with kids at the Play 60 clinic today. And the weather was divine.

Film don’t lie, gang!

A year ago, the NFL welcomed a handful of elite prospects at the position Smith happens to play. Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck led their teams to the playoffs and Russell Wilson was a delightful surprise, though, when you think about it today, that ought to make you evaluate the evaluation process.

I mean, should he have been a third-round pick? Or was he one because he was, and still is, smallish? Have you peeked at a record book and the things he did at a position that demands those things? That record book, by the way, no longer includes his former record for consecutive passes without an interception.

Now, it’s true none of the quarterbacks to follow are as good. Sorry. And I don’t think it helps that there are a lot of them available. It’s easier to diminish the quality of the crop whole when many of them are questionable prospects.

Geno’s been a target, from the jump, and the criticism has evolved. Never mind he challenged a lot of Wilson’s most intangible records, or Geno’s ridiculous stats, or the hard-to-dispute suggestion the NFL is evolving to feature offenses that contain a lot of what WVU does.

A guy who played in West Virginia is now seen as a liability in a cold-weather market.

Hey, I was at Texas Tech and Iowa State and the Pinstripe Bowl and I’m positive I don’t disagree with that. I do wonder if, say, Houston-raised, California-schooled, Pac-12-staged Andrew Luck, or similarly climate conducive RGIII, would have acquired a similar rep if they played in a place more susceptible to the elements.

But it’s a factor. Mike Mayock knew about the Pinstripe Bowl and he heard the questions. He then — and this is true — checked the weather for the days and the sites of WVU’s other games in 2012 and decided it was a good idea to watch the Iowa State game. He said it was a “rough” day for Geno and he highlighted the concerns NFL teams must have.

As for Geno, who’s been assailed by a popular college football publication and who Tuesday took to Twitter to “thank” his critics, he seems at ease with everything that’s being said of him and his happening around him. And all the questions came running at him Wednesday like linebackers sent through the A gaps.

One last thing, and while this may go over some of your heads, this is absolutely vital for those of us who’ve been here since 2009, who know what Eu means, who were ready to by my “Eu 12” shirts: Geno was asked who his favorite player was as a kid …

“Emmitt Smith. I loved the Cowboys. That was my favorite team. But he was E. Smith and I was E. Smith …”
