When the pained words spill from Matt Humphrey’s mouth,  understand he really means them. Losing is all he’s known in college. Humphrey is a fifth-year senior on his third college team and the 121 games he’s been witness to in four seasons have been played 29 games below .500.

He’s yet to reach the postseason, though he was close with a 16-16 Oregon team in 2009-10, but that team missed out and the season was rocky enough that the longtime coach was fired.

Humphrey then transferred to Boston College. And then you begin to grasp how ill-fated his ride has been.

He’s yet to play on a team that won more than three straight games. The Ducks won six straight in his sophomore season, but he was out for all of it with a knee injury. The Eagles were a decent team in 2010-11, boasting one first-round draft pick, sweeping Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech in the ACC and beating Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament to make it to the NIT, but Humphrey had to sit out the whole season.

His one-year run with the Mountaineers hasn’t gone as planned, either. He’s been hurt again and never got on track. His team is losing again, likely to miss the postseason for the first time in 10 years, and a lot the trouble is because Humphrey sees at WVU things he saw at Oregon and B.C.

“Inexperience,” he said. “All three teams had young guys. I guess the whole thing with guys being so good these days coming out of high school, it’s like young guys are going to prevail. Sometimes at the end of the day, coming through and taking care of business at the age of 18, that’s a hard thing to do.

“Sometimes guys don’t do that right away and they have to be in college a few more years. It’s OK. But it doesn’t matter with winning games. I’ve seen a little bit of stuff as far as that.”
