What a weekend for Randy Mazey in his three-game debut as WVU baseball coach.

A 4-0 loss in the opener, even though the Mountaineers weren’t awful (three unearned runs after a two-out throwing error in a three-run inning, no runs and two hits in 3.1 innings from relief pitchers and the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning).

A 7-6 loss on a walk-off single, but a rally from three runs down early in the game, a two-out single to take the lead in the eighth and 12 base hits.

A 4-3 win in the finale with 13 more hits, solid pitching and, apparently, a flash of Mazey’s acumen.

One thing I heard again and again on my visit to TCU was that Mazey had a knack for seeing into the future and making calculated baseball decisions. Sure enough, North Florida had the game-tying run on first in the bottom of the ninth, only to end the game when Mazey called for a pitchout and caught the pinch runner trying to steal.

Afterward, he complimented his starter on keeping the ball down in the strike zone — sound familiar? — and had to be happy with his bullpen in the series. True, it gave away the second game, but in the three games it offered 10.2 innings and allowed just three runs.

All in all, not a bad trip. The overall performance, and the last two games in particular, had to make for a more palatable venture home.
