Dana does signing day …

… in style. Look at the tie. Peep the lapel pin!

Early in the question and answer part, there’s a question about adding to the list of 25 names and Dana sort of tiptoes around things. He gives an answer, though while he says things, he’s not saying things.

This would seem to all be in reference to DeShawn Coleman, Marquion Lane and Jacky Marcellus.

They were not on the list of 25. They “signed,” though. That said, Ryan Dorchester, the coordinator of recruiting operations, told me that WVU announced Wednesday all the names of people who signed and who were to receive national letters of intent and grant-in-aid packages.

What Lane and Marcellus signed, he said, were basically commitment letters. It seems Coleman will do the same today. These are not binding and don’t guarantee scholarships. There are things  that have to happen before that can happen.

If they do handle those affairs, the player is committed to the school and Dorchester said WVU will remain committed to the players. If those issues are not settled, they move on without one another.

I’ve heard of this, but I don’t recall coming across this practice before covering WVU. That said, the NCAA is really limiting schools so it’s easy to see why a school might put a preventative measure in place if a kid has bad grades or even a bad knee. Time will tell on these three.
