Kansas, ranked No. 1 today by the coaches, is also No. 1 in the NCAA in field-goal percentage defense. That’s just awful news for WVU, which is still among the words shooting teams in America.

So bad are the Mountaineers from the perimeter and a few dribbles in that they’ve tried to make their living this season around and attacking the basket. The Jayhawks have a 7-foot center who will make that extremely difficult tonight.

Jeff Withey has blocked 82 shots this season — that despite his deserved reputation, one that’s been ignored since he’s No. 2 nationally with 4.2 blocks per game. WVU has blocked 74 shots this season.

He rebounds, he scores inside, he can knock down jumpers, he even averages an assist per game, but he’s a defensive menace in the paint.

“With me, long arms definitely helps and I think I can jump pretty high,” said Withey, a preseason first-team all-Big 12 pick. “But the sense of timing is big, for sure. There are a lot of tall guys out there who can’t block shots, a lot of guys with long arms and big hands, but a lot of it has to do with timing. It’s something you can’t really learn. You just kind of have it.”
