For a long time, WVU couldn’t lose three straight under Bob Huggins. There were two-game losing streaks throughout his five seasons, but the Mountaineers usually snapped it off there and had a nice win to go with it.

Last season was the first three-game losing streak under Huggins — at St. Johns, which was a season-changer; at Syracuse, which was controversial thanks to Abe Keita; and against Pitt, which was when Kevin Noreen broke his ankle and from where things went really bad.

Well, today you have your second three-game skid under Huggins. He hasn’t seen a four-game slide since 1985 … when I was a savvy pre-schooler trying to take five minutes from tomorrow’s recess so we could be outside five minutes longer today and then laughing maniacally when the teacher realized today was Friday.

That was his first season at Akron, which was his first Division I job. That was the last time Huggins coached a team to a sub-.500 record. The Zips lost seven in a row as part of a 2-8 start, which, of course, means Huggins finished 10-6. (By the way, that was the year Villanova beat Georgetown in the national championship game. That long ago.)

A losing season isn’t necessarily at stake tonight, but a four-game schneid is when the Mountaineers play host to TCU (7:30 p.m., ESPN2).

Don’t expect invigorating excitement. The Horned Frogs (9-9, 0-5 Big 12) do what they have to do to win, which is to say they don’t do much.

This is Trent Johnson finding a way — and he’s been coach of the year in three conferences, so I trust this is the best way for his guys. Think Notre Dame in 2010. TCU ranks in the 300s, and sometimes high 300s, in possessions per game, field goals made and attempted, 3-pointers made and attempted and points per game.
