‘I’m done’

Let’s grab the Windex and the paper towels and clear up one thing right away: A Bob Huggins postgame press conference is, by definition, eventful.

It seems like every one of them this season has featured an event. A one-liner, an anecdote, a compelling critique of one player or one aspect of his team, a completely transparent explanation that is so honest it makes you just a little uncomfortable.

There have been so many just this year alone that, I don’t know, you get a little numb to it. So Wednesday night, Huggins was doing his thing in Ames and, not unlike prior episodes, said something to the effect of, “From this point forward, we’re playing small.”

He explained that his team fell too far behind with a big lineup and came all the way back with a small lineup. The big lineup did something it always does. The small lineup … well, Huggins didn’t quite know what he had, which was why he gave it a whirl. He said he “needed a guy,” and that explained the stunningly successful Matt Humphrey cameo — and I said it in the blog and I’ll say it again here: He acted like he should have been out there all along.

Yet was this “new” intel? Huggins had hinted at it before when laying out frustrations with Deniz Kilicli and Aaric Murray. He’d added some dribble-drive concepts to the motion offense. He’d bumped up minutes for guys like Eron Harris and Gary Browne. He even moved Kilicli and then Murray out of the starting lineup.

Was he to be believed, in the moment, in that moment, when he realized he’d again lost by a most narrow margin, even with so many flaws?

One could not be sure, so Justin Jackson pressed the matter, reminded Huggins he’d said similar things in the past and was then cut off by Huggins like he was jumping line at a pullover sale.

“We’re going with a small lineup,” Huggins said. “I’m not doing it anymore. I’m done. They’ve had ample opportunities, over half the season now. How can it be worse? We’re 1-3. How can it be worse?”

And there was your event. It wasn’t loud or emphatic, but rather delivered with such nonchalance that you thought you might want to believe it.

So, do you? And what will this look like moving forward?
