It’s raining here in Austin today and that keeps me from doing some fun stuff, which is to stay keeps me from eating at a lot of food trucks, as opposed to a few, and keeps me from walking Sixth Street and taking in a lot of the other visual treats on the empty campus in the city that is so proud of the fact it is so weird.

That got me thinking — and this is what happens when I’m cooped up for a while.

Though I’d never compare myself to a basketball player, I do know those guys are sequestered today until they head to the arena two or so hours before the 8 p.m. CST game. That’s not fun. And that’s not the end of the late-start road games. This is just the beginning of that, as well as the eventually ruthless road trips.

Again, not a player, don’t play one in this space, but, man, that gets old after a while … and this is going to be going on for WVU for a while. And hasn’t WVU battled and lost to indifference throughout this season?

There’s a lot to manage and endure and, really, there isn’t much of a blueprint to unroll and study. Everything is new in this inaugural Big 12 season, even for a veteran like Bob Huggins who, we sometimes forget, has a Big 12 season on his resume.

Not that it matters.

“I honestly haven’t been through this,” he said. “I was in Kansas. We were basically an hour (flight) from everybody. I’ve never been through this before, this kind of travel on a day-to-day basis.”

WVU (7-6, 0-1 Big 12) makes the first of nine conference road trips and the final non-conference road trip today when it travels to Austin, Texas, for Wednesday’s 9 p.m. ESPN2 game against the Texas Longhorns (8-5, 0-1). The Mountaineers will take charter flights to each, but the closest trip is more than 850 miles to Ames, Iowa, and that Iowa State game is part of a potentially difficult sequence.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’ve done it before,” Huggins said. “In non-conference games at Cincinnati, we played everybody. We played Washington. We played Southern Cal. We played all those people, but it wasn’t like one at home, travel four hours, come back and play at home and then travel four hours. I’ve never done that.”
