‘They blitzed the crap out of us’

So said Geno Smith, who was sacked for the first time in 296 days against Maryland.

I guess that was a “blitz” in that a fourth person pressured, but WVU should win 6-on-4 and WVU did not. That was something of a theme throughout a day when Maryland threw some good stuff at the Mountaineers and managed to get home quite often, which really disrupted WVU’s offense, especially on third down.

Smith hadn’t been hit like that in quite some time, and it wasn’t exactly common to what the  Terrapins had done in their first three games. Then again, offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said WVU wasn’t sure what Maryland would do because its defense hadn’t played anyone who employed even a WVU formation, let alone a WVU play or philosophy.

So the Terps dialed it up a lot and the Mountaineers are expecting to see that a lot.

“That’s what teams are going to do to us,” Smith said. “But that’s a sign of a good offense. If you come out and run the same offense you did last week against us, we’re going to find matchups and exploit things. Maryland did a good job mixing up coverages and trying to rattle our domes.”

WVU’s offense had four three-and-out series after just one the first two games.

The timing matters, too, because the Mountaineers play their first Big 12 Conference game Saturday at home against Baylor, which moved to 3-0 with Friday’s road win against Louisiana-Monroe. The noon game will be televised by FX.

“I would guess it’s probably going to be like that against Baylor,” Dawson said. “They’ll have a long week to prepare and they’re probably going to throw in some wrinkles.”
