Eleven things to read to get to know No. 11 WVU

F Double is in the works, but won’t come until later … and, yes, I grasp that this is pretty much the longest day of the year for you. Here’s help: Eleven things to read so that you get to know the 11th-ranked team in the country before tomorrow’s kickoff.

1) WVU has more Xboxes! Also, the Puskar Center is just a much more comfortable place to be this season.

2) Obstacles and controversy may have made the Mountaineers who and what they were in 2011, but those things are gone now.

3) WVU and Marshall are not playing football against one another any time soon. Saturday ends the series for at least a long time.

4) WVU and the Big 12 Conference are ready for one another, but, man, the excitement in Morgantown is impossible to ignore and almost as hard to resist.

5) Tavon Austin was terrific in 2011. He’s probably going to be better in 2012. At least, that’s the idea behind a position change.

6) A Heisman Trophy candidate and NFL prospect, Geno Smith is swoll.

7) Dana Holgorsen can X and O with anybody.

8) Position players make significant improvements in their second season in Dana Holgorsen’s offense, but so, too, do the offensive linemen. WVU has four starters and seven trusted players who are in their second season, plus Josh Jenkins, who is a starter and no slouch, but missed the 2011 season with an injury. This group is extraordinarily tight.

9) Freshman Jordan Thompson will be a focal point of the offense, but also the defense. He’s going to get a lot of touches, but he’s going to get smacked a lot. As such, he’s getting out of bounds as can.

10) In between touchdowns and/or trips to the beer kiosk, WVU will play defense. As best as we can tell, it’s going to be more aggressive and feature more blitzes. That will include cornerbacks who press and jam receivers and blitz. Ergo, WVU’s defense is going to be as good as its cornerbacks.

11) This is going to be fun.
