Bat signal? (6:49 p.m. update at bottom)

As you can see, WVU quarterback Geno Smith was not at today’s practice and Dana Holgorsen would not address it during practice — that being one of the five 30-minute sessions we’re actually allowed to see and attempt to report on during camp. He instead suggested, through a media relations proxy, that we ask about it at tonight’s 7:30 p.m. press conference — previously scheduled, by the way.

This feels odd …

I don’t want to get too dramatic about this because we just don’t know yet and we will soon. That said, I usually get a moment to chat with coaches during practice. It felt like to me like that was not going to happen today before I realized Geno wasn’t there. Maybe I’m subconsciously embellishing now, who knows?

I also heard someone on the staff talking about Geno and then realize a press person was nearby. That WVU person then asked the press person, in essence, “You can delete that, right?” Hard to put that into context since I didn’t hear what was supposed to be deleted, so I won’t.

And honestly? For all we know he was going to he 40 minutes late and showed up after the media left.

Still, anytime I’ve asked before about an absent player, including Geno, I’ve gotten an answer and it would have been very hard for WVU to say “He’s injured” or “Family emergency” and even tack on “… ask about it at the press

I’m getting rumors plus other items people insist to be fact and one idea has come from both sources. Impossible for me to know for sure what’s happening. We haven’t seen practice or talked to Dana since Monday and haven’t seen Geno since Tuesday morning’s interviews, when he appeared to be healthy.

Stay tuned, right? In the meantime, this went public yesterday.

Update: Source close to all of this says it’s a personal matter — I’ll save the specifics in case Dana chooses to do so, too — and has “nothing to do with him.” This is the rumor/fact I was getting from both sides. He needs a few days to deal with it and will be back for the start of class/practice Monday.
