The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Hey! Live football!

My apologies, everyone. This is the best I could do, but this is your Mountaineers methadone. It’s live football that you actually get to see and it’s good on good.

It came literally out of nowhere. Period No. 3 ended, the white and the blue headed to opposite sides of the field and I thought, “Well, this is what would normally precede a scrimmage situation — nah.”

Only, it did precede a scrimmage situation.

So then I’m fumbling for my video camera before I realize I need to lock down the starting lineups. I missed two plays, but to hell with footage. I need information. And so do you …

Your Aug. 13, 2012, first-team offense: Eu and Shawne Alston in the backfield. Quinton Spain, Josh Jenkins, Joe Madsen, Jeff Braun and Pat Eger left to right on the offensive line. Tavon and Jordan Thompson as inside receivers with Stedman Bailey and J.D. Woods (!) as outside receivers.

How about that? Not only is Thompson one of the best four, but so, too, is Woods. He won’t go away, no matter the position.

Defensively, things got a little tricky. Will Clarke was the defensive end and Jorge Wright was the defensive tackle, even though he’s really only played nose at WVU. That went instead to Shaq Rowell.

Let’s be careful not to make too much of that. WVU went 3-4, which put Tyler Anderson at the Buck linebacker spot. If WVU goes 4-3, Wright goes inside again and Anderson, or Josh Francis or whoever, slides down to the defensive end.

As for the rest of the linebackers, Terence Garvin was at the Star, Doug Rigg was the Sam and Jared Barber was the Will.

Brodrick Jenkins and Pat Miller were the corners while freshman Karl Joseph was the field safety and K.J. Dillon was the boundary safety. And let’s be careful there, too. Joseph looks like the starter, but Dillon was where he was because Darwin Cook sat out in a red jersey.

Joining Cook? Cornerback Avery Williams and safeties Matt Moro and Traivis Bell — and apparently he wasn’t hurt. This is where someone would say “That’s a lot of experience on the sideline. No wonder so many freshmen played!”

Not-uh.

Freshmen Nana Kyeremeh and Ricky Rumph seem to be your second-team corners, no matter who is in red, while Joseph has been a starter from the beginning of camp and Dillon has been backing up Cook for a while now. These freshmen are playing. They all repped Monday.

The scrimmage was very brief. Just one drive. It ended when Eu threw a touchdown pass to Tavon — inside of Pat Miller — on third-and-goal. Before that, Jenkins broke up a deep pass to Stedman on the first play, and I’m not sure he didn’t strip it and cause a fumble. In fact, I say he did.

Thompson caught a crossing route and ran free, but slowed down a little and Garvin caught up and swatted him to the ground.

When the ball got inside the 10-yard line, WVU lined up Cody Clay at tight end — not the slot. Later, on the third down play, Ryan Clarke was the H-back behind the right tackle and Donovan Miles motioned over to Clarke’s side. There was a playaction fake and that opened the middle of the field for Tavon.

Can’t say I saw either of those two things very often last season. And I can’t say I’ve seen any of that in camp, which perhaps explains why Holgorsen sidled over to the media and said, “Are you guys happy now?”

Now, before all of that, kickoffs were live again and I’m not sure what to think. Part of me wants to think the Mountaineers are not going full speed so returns are easier, but part of me knows that and still sees good blocking and vision.

And just to really confuse me, there is almost always bad with good. Half-speed or not, second-team or not, this can’t happen. If you don’t believe me, check a perplexed Dana’s reaction.
