WVU sticks receiver on sideline

Remember Thursday when Dana Holgorsen said there are some players on his roster who might not be academically eligible in the fall? We have one candidate today and it’s a big name.

When asked simply about how to get Ivan McCartney going, offensive coordinator/receiver coach Shannon Dawson pulled the curtain back a little bit.

“He’s just an inconsistent guy right now. Not just in football, but a lot of aspects of life. Grades, academics, that comes first and that’s why right now he’s in the situation he’s in.”

And that situation seems to be watching WVU practice while the Mountaineers devote their time and energy to players the staff trusts will be on hand in two weeks.

“We’re not going to waste reps on a guy when we don’t know if he’s going to be eligible or not. Right now, he’s not doing anything. Basically, he’s done nothing. Does he have the talent? Yes, he does. My challenge to him would just be — he has to be more consistent and all that, but he’s got to be more consistent in a couple aspects of life in general.”

McCartney’s been a target for this type of attention from the first time Holgorsen was asked to assess the receivers on his new team in the 2011 spring. Whether it was effort or injuries or now this, he’s been a guy the coaches have been on top of, though for a very clear reason.

Well, two very clear reasons.

One, it seemed that he needed that motivation, though I guess it’s fair to wonder about that now. Two, he’s a talent who last year caught 49 passes for 585 yards and three touchdowns, most of that coming earlier in the season before he again fell out of favor.  He caught 15 passes for 130 yards and no touchdowns in the final seven games of the season. After the sixth game — by the way, a six catch, 131-yard day against Connecticut — he was on pace for 68 receptions, 910 yards and six touchdowns.

The Mountaineers would love to have him, Geno, Tavon and Stedman, in particular, but the Mountaineers don’t want to be had.
