Another player on the move

This one also makes sense, and it might be good news for multiple positions.

Shaq Petteway was a very good linebacker at Steubenville High who was asked to play safety as a true freshman last season. He did all right and really wasn’t asked to do too much, not even when Terence Garvin was out for the bowl and Petteway and Wes Tonkery battled for the playing time.

In the spring, the 3-4* arrived with Joe DeForest and he shifted Garvin, Tonkery and Petteway to the star linebacker position, which is the hybrid safety/outside linebacker. When camp began Thursday, Petteway was shuttled to a new spot. He’s with Doug Rigg, Isaiah Bruce and Troy Gloster at the sam linebacker, which is one of WVU’s two middle spots.

That adds some depth there, which is nice, and Petteway is more mobile than he is big. While Rigg is big and I’ve always liked him as a player, I think there remains some suspicion as to whether he can play across a season. Behind him? Who knows what WVU has, but surely Petteway is going to have a chance to not be third- or fourth-string. He’s not not that guy.

This would also mean that Garvin has given no one reason to worry and that Tonkery has been beyond reassuring … but it leaves just two guys at a very important position. It’s audition time there and figure that Sean Walters is ready to roll.

* – This thing really isn’t a 3-4 or a 4-3. I think I’m going back to calling it the 7.
