The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Out yonder waits …

On most days, I can see clear down the street that runs parallel with my house to the intersection one would cross to sneak into the south end zone of the practice field. The indoor practice structure just beyond the natural grass field is visible, too. Head to my street’s end, hook a left and look simply to the right and you can pretty plainly see the top of the stadium.

Not this morning. It seemed eerily foreboding and appropriate as WVU stares down who knows what when preseason camp begins this afternoon on the other end of that fog at Mountaineer Field. We get to see 30 minutes, beginning at 5 p.m., and though I think it’s useless and wholly uninformative, I do want to see who is and isn’t there and I want my eyeballs to tell my mind that someone is bigger or smaller or leaner or quicker than before. That, if nothing else, is productive on the first few days.

Already we know linebacker Sam Lebbie won’t be making it from the freshman class and the word I’ve received and seen in other places that know better than I do is Deontay McManus won’t be here, either. I haven’t heard anything good about a second receiver, Dee Joyner, in a long time. Only running back Roshard Burney seems unknown at present. WVU is planning and hoping to have him, but likely won’t know until the weekend or next week.

There could be some running back help — and let’s be honest: We just don’t know about Dustin Garrison yet — so let’s keep an eye for a while on these two names: D.J. Hunt (5 feet, 9 inches, 200 pounds) and D’Vontis Arnold (5-9, 185).

They’re both preferred walk-ons, Hunt from Raleigh, N.C., and Arnold from that school in Miramar, Fla. They could have played elsewhere, but Arnold decided right around signing day to come to WVU and Hunt has been on campus since last month. I can’t believe Garrison is going to get heavy duty early, and while there are others on the roster ahead of Hunt and Arnold, WVU clearly things highly of them any may soon want to see what they provide.
