The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Bob Huggins undoes the top button

Bob Huggins was pretty honest, emotional and, dare I say, resigned in last night’s postgame press conference. Not sure I’ve seen him quite like that before. Not sure you can argue with anything he says, either.

Such an odd game and it has to hurt. WVU didn’t play well at all and really had a chance to win. The three turnovers were the fewest in a game since 1953  — and, boy, did that 1952-53 squad value the ball.  Deniz and Jabarie were, I though, pretty solid in a game they needed to be pretty solid.

Even Truck had managed a worthwhile game even if he was 0-for-6/0-for-3. He never had eight assists in a game before and he didn’t turn it over until the absolute worst time, and that wasn’t long after nearly turning it over in a similar spot before. Does he need to shoot it more? His teammates said yes, but that the shots weren’t there. Huggins agreed, and Truck really isn’t a guy who’s going to make a lot of forced shots.

And yet it was right there and it got away on a night when the rather small margin this team plays with was exposed.

It took more than 30 minutes for a fourth player to score for WVU. Huggins didn’t substitute at all in the second half until he had to with 18.8 seconds remaining. Aaron Brown, Keaton Miles and Dominique Rutledge appear to be on short leashes Huggins won’t let them wrap around their teammates’ necks. There was no help and even Garw Browne, the eventual fourth player to score, did just as many bad things as he did good things.

That led to this from Huggins.

“We’ve got a whole bunch of guys who would have never played if we didn’t have all the problems we had and if we didn’t have just three guys who returned,” Huggins said. “They wouldn’t have played. And I told them, ‘You have a wonderful opportunity, but the problem is we still need to win.’

“And with that opportunity comes responsibility. You have to know what you’re doing. It’s frustrating to sit in there and say, ‘Here’s what we’re going to run. Here’s where you’re going to go.’ Then a guy goes to the wrong place or we dribble to the wrong side of the floor.”

Trying times at the Coliseum and it gets absolutely no easier now.

Speaking of trying times, that settlement thing may happen today, but you might not know until tomorrow. Or it could happen tomorrow and you’ll know tomorrow. That’s the way those things go. The Rhode Island judge decided today to continue the conference to an “unspecified date,” which should be a pretty good indication that this thing is all but over. The Rhode Island judge who emceed the hearing is keeping the wheels spinning, but still … WVU is paying $11 million. As touched upon last night in the game blog, money is going to come from somewhere else to put the final number given to the Big East a good bit higher. And that’s it for me today. Personal workshop day. Bat signal is at the ready, though.
