The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Is this the end?

Perhaps I’m too pragmatic, or maybe I’m just not very smart, but I sense the Big East and WVU are done with their legal deeds and I hope we see a finish Thursday. (Note: I have a vacation day Thursday … so it’s happening.)

I just don’t see how we can sit down at the table, line up all the pieces that are available in front of us and not form that conclusion. Either WVU made a huge mistake Friday by telling Florida State there would be no 2012 game, or this thing is done and just needs the signatures, which could come in Thursday’s court-scheduled appointments.

There’s no way West Virginia dismisses Florida State unless the Mountaineers are absolutely certain they won’t be a part of the Big East in 2012 and has a guarantee from the Big East. We could see that Thursday.

It could be that the two sides have already reached a proposed settlement and that they’ll submit it to the judge that requested this hearing.

That judge will then agree or disagree with the proposal and make sure the terms are fair and equal for both sides and any third parties that may be involved and affected by the conclusion.

Just a hunch, but I think a hunch that is influenced heavily by current events and common sense … and really, shame on WVU if it pink-slipped the Seminoles and isn’t 110 percent sure the Big East is OK with WVU going to the Big 12 in 2012.

Truthfully, what matters most is not when this thing ends, but how it ends and the details are going to be the most meaningful parts of the resolution.

I pose a theory with my column — opinion, everyone … but I generally inform my opinions — that is probably far too tidy and convenient. The Big East should add Boise State for 2012 and have WVU handle the $5 million buyout from the Mountain West. That way Boise State doesn’t pay, the Big East isn’t damaged for losing its premier football program because it replaced WVU with another premier program and the remaining Big East schools have an opponent in WVU’s vacated slot in the 2012 schedule.

Now, the Boise State president last week said it was “too late” to get his school out of the MWC and into the Big East for 2012, but I can’t believe that’s a factor. Not as we witness WVU and the Big East doing what they’re doing right now. Further, I think the Big East might be foolish not to pursue this and make it happen.

What if the Big 12 or Pac-12 expands again and wants Boise State and Boise State is still in the MWC? The Big East can’t get TCU’d again, so if adding Boise State right now is s an option, I say go for it. The Big East might be inflicting some damage on the MWC, but that can be cleaned up with a check, and perhaps WVU pays throws some money that way, too.

The other argument here, and it makes some sense, is that the Big East is taking Boise State for football only and that that isn’t enough to make up for what the conference loses on the basketball side when WVU goes. Again, it makes sense, but that’s also if you believe there won’t be a split anytime soon. I don’t believe that, either.

Tidy, convenient, probably nowhere near feasible and a good reason why I’m not in charge of anything except this blog.
