WVU v. Providence: Straight out the frying pan

Live from a normally chilly Dunkin’ Donuts Center, where the basketball court is above a layer of ice and the temperature is always a few degrees below comfortable. Looks like everyone who is supposed to be here for WVU is here. No one got hurt getting off the bus or anything like that.

Also, I know we’re beyond signing day, but I thought you might be surprised to know that Providence has Big East basketball’s top-rated 2012 recruiting class.

Might get better, too. A five-star center in the 2013 class named Nerlens Noel was reclassified into the 2012 class this week and has included Providence on his list of possibilities. I believe I overheard he’s here today, too.

11:41 am: Also heard this, courtesy Dave Hickman. There are no Dunkin’ Donuts here. He found one kiosk, but it sold coffee. This is akin to no air conditioning in the Carrier Dome and no Papa John’s Pizza at Papa John’s stadium.

On the topic of food, here’s an item from today’s pre-game spread:

I believe it’s a breadless sandwich. Correct me if I’m wrong.

11:51: Separated at birth?

Notre Dame’s iconic Touchdown Jesus.

Providence’s enormous inflated Friar mascot. It’s good!

12:06 pm: Friars go zone and KJ misses a 3, but Turk rebounds … and turns it over on three seconds.

12:07: Check that bounce pass from Hinds to Truck on the 3. It set him up in catch-hop rhythm. And it went in. Hinds gets a steal on the other end and WVU goes ahead 5-2.

12:14:  WVU having a hard time keeping a collar on Vince Council. I’mhaving a hard time believing Kilicli went a smooth 2-for-2 at the foul line.

12:15: Exactly what WVU had to do to beat the zone. High post to KJ, low post to Turk and he finished a series of post moved and dunked on a shorter opponent. Can’t goaltend that.

12:17: Forgot to mention the officials are Bob Donato (he once tackled John Flowers), Jamie Lucky (Marshall game this year) and Jeff Anderson, who I don’t ever remember seeing work.

12:20: Precisely the start you didn’t want for WVU: All of Providence’s baskets are layup/dunks or 3s. LaDontae Henton,  who can really heat up in a hurry, just put on a sweater and made back-to-back 3s. The Friars are 8-for-10 and the crowd wants to believe. WVU is 4-for-11 and Truck is 1-4/1-3. KJ hasn’t scored and has hurried two shots, I say, but he has 1 of 2 free throws go in to make it 19-13.

12:24: Council scores, Brown bricks a 3, Truck rattles a stick pack around and out and Henton hits a third three. Trouble, everybody.

12:25: Might be your season on the brink right here. Truck misses a 3 long and wears it as he gets back ondefense. Henton feeds Coleman for a layuup and a 26-13 lead. Remember, WVU 1-6 when down 10 or more.

12:27: Cotton makes on with KJ in his face and KJ give a “You’ve got to be kidding me!” look at Cotton, who was on the ground. Friars are 12-for-14.

12:29: Providence has made 10 straight shots and leads by 15. WVU can’t do anything right.

12:33: Fascinating 7:15 for WVU here …

12:34: Kilicli with a tricky inside pass to KJ for a score and then a patient hook shot for another score … but then he throws one away on the third possession. WVU has slowed things down now and forced misses on back-to-back possessions … or as many as in the previous 13 minutes total.

12:36: Kilicli. Controlled. WVU. Settled. Much better this way. Has to dictate tempo and has dont that hte last three minutes … 7-2 run.

12:38: Here comes Paul Herbert Williamson…and I have to believe it’s for defensive purposes as much as for his offensive potential. WVU isn’t stopping the ball.

12:45: Have to say, Providence fans were resigned to something like this happening. Their team seems more surprised. Friars, without that offensive boost, aren’t playing withthe same energy on defense or rebounding with WVU and the Mountaineers have a 16-5 run when Brown makes a 3 to send Providence into a timeout. Home team up just 37-31. You knew WVU wouldn’t quit. Fascinating 7:15…

12:49: Providence runs a very nice faux screen to get Cotton open for a 3 to end the half. After the torrid start, the Friars fo 2-10 into the locker room, but still lead 42-36. Hardest thing to do in college basketball, I think, is coming back from that 12-, 15-, 18- point deficit on the road. Takes a lot of energy. Good thing is WVU has halftime to recuperate. Bad thing is WVU played uphill almost the entire first half.

1:06: Huggins starts the second half with Brown, Browne, Truck, KJ and Kilicli.

1:10: Serious, all that work in the second half, and PC is back up 10, 49-39.

1:12: Truck’s made his last three 3s…let’s see how streaky he is.

1:13: He’s misses 4-for-4 by inches. Needed to look at his feet, but he was in a groove. Presumably still is. He’s got it down to 49-44 withg 15:29 to go.

1:17: Providence extends the defense and it does slow down WVU, but KJ hits in the middle of the zone. It’s just his third basket.

1:18: BREAKING: Truck feeling it. Providence steps onhis toes on the perimeter, he steps in and flicks in a floater … and didn’t try to draw a foul.

1:19: Uhoh. Drew the foul on that one and he was strutting after the make. He’s made his last six shots and the fans are screaming. “He has 20 points. Guard. Him.”

1:20: Heat check. Luke warm from 25 feet.

1:22: Truck forces one and the Friars sawit coming. Batts blocked the shot inside and Providence ran … and COleman is going ot go right every time, but he’s left-handed.

1:27: Kadeem Batts has four fouls. I have no idea how he did that. WVU is down 57-51 at the under-12 timeout. Canm’t fade too much farther back if you want to win. Time for the Kiss Cam at the Dunk!

1:30: The Friars have no seniors, by the way. And Coleman goes right and goes hard and will now shoot two left-handed free throws.

1:32: Iso play against man-to-man. WVU had four players on one side of the floor and KJ on the other. He scored.

1:32: Eeeh, Truck. Bad turnover leads to a fastbreak and a 3.

1:34: Henton gets the layup, but leavs the 9 and 10 pins standing.

1:34: And a 3 by KJ. Here we go now. It’s 64-59. Jabarie Hinds is in, though I imagine not for long.

1:38: KJ is 5-for-12 and he’s had good shots. The larger concern is he has three rebounds. Can’t figure out that one because he’s been inside a lot, WVU is shooting 43.5 percent and he does his work with the offensive rebounds.

1:40: Right on cue…

1:41: By the way, previous timeout had a contest for a giveaway but the PA said “Since there aren’t five students here, we cannot give away the LCDTV.” And he’s serious. There’s no student section.

1:42: Truck, Turk and KJ have 52 points. Everyone else has 11 on 3-for-10 shooting. Really, good thing Truck showed up this afternoon. Friars have 65 of 70 points from four players.

1:46: One of the best halves I’ve ever seen Truck play. The offense goes without saying, but he’s guarded and moved theball and played pretty steady when WVU had to have it. Steal-and-dunk was a big play. Got WVU a basket and probably saved 25 seconds.

1:49: In case you were curious, here’s my headache-inducing seat today. That was pregame. Two hours later…

1:52: Friars have no one who can handle Kilicli, but a foul is good for 1-for-2 at the line. It’s 71-70 and the Friars have the ball in the lead. Big possession and Coleman goes left — he was about to sweep right — and draws a foul on Truck. Tough break there for Truck, but Coleman goes 1-for-2.

1:54: I’m calling The Wink right here. Perfect time for it. Quick. High-percentage. Deniz can rebound. And I’m sure Ed Cooley knows this.

1:55: My bad, Providence plays zone. I forgot about that. Can’t wink the zone.

1:56: Deniz had guys open. He could have passed the ball. Looked like got through to him that no one on Providence can handle him.

1:58: Coleman. Right. Stop. Step in. Miss. Rebound. Score. Sixty-four seconds left for WVU and down by a basket.

2:00: Tried and tried and tried to get it inside to KJ and he couldn’t get open. Council misses a free throw and makes the second. WVU calls its last timeout down 75-72 with 26.6 to go. Quick two or a 3? The Friars are a pertty good team at the free throw line. I look for a quick two.

2:03: Also, really god crowd here.

2:04: KJ bails Truck out there and rebounds and scores after Truck misses an elow jumper. Free throws for Coleman with 11.8 seconds to go. A 66.7 percent shoter goes 1-for-2.

2:06: Truck. Truck! That was extremely difficult. Friars have four seconds now. Jump around!

2:08: Not saying the PA is a homer, but after Council shot, he hit “Jump Around” again. Overtime.

2:13: Truck has 29 points, 21 in second half. He had 14, 12, 16, 6, 22, 18 and 8 in last seven games. Kilcili scored and WVU has its first lead since it was 7-6.

2:14: We’re clear on this one thing, right? Coleman will go right.

2:16: This is one of Kilicli’s best games, too, complete with the shot block/shoulder tackle on defense.

2:17: Providence with all the variable on its side right here. Man, I don’t want to see this game end up decided by free throws. Too many plays and players here allof a sudden.

2:19: Coleman goes right and misses, but he gets the rebound again and has two free throws. Brown fouled Coleman as he was putting it back. Good call. Again, Coleman is a 66-7 percent shooter at the free-throw line. These are trickier with 10.9 seconds to go. And Huggins uses a timeout to let him think about that.

2:21: And he’s 1-for-2.

2:21: Forever Truck! Game-winning 3 and WVU survives 87-84.
