The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Coaching staff stuff

A little late here, but I’ve been (traveling and) working on this today and I fully expect Jeff Casteel, David Lockwood and Bill Kirelawich to be announced at Arizona tomorrow. Riveting, I know.

Everything Tuessday pointed that way — first a source telling me, then Arizona confirming just that the school would hire a TE, LB, DL and CB coach and then visual confirmation, of sorts, when the Wildcats website briefly posted biographies for the three WVU coaches.

We’re hearing almost nothing out of WVU, and for a few reasons. First, WVU won’t say a word about the exits. That’s Arizona’s job and WVU hardly ever publicizes exits. The background checks ended Tuesday and sometimes a hiring school will call the former school to get biographical information, but that’s about all the former school ever gets to know.

Also, things have really quieted over there. It’s tightened up a lot, and if I were to put my finger on something, I’d say it was probably the Big 12 mishap, but it was trending that way before. Change in leadership, I suppose.

I will say this: Outsiders — I guess that’s what you’d call them … they’re really not that exotic, but I can’t think of a better word — who I spoke to who have attachments inside were really surprised by the news, which made me think all these thoughts people had about disharmony weren’t nearly as prevalent to those who might be aware of them.

I don’t know, weird observation, but it struck me as odd that a few people were surprised. Maybe the disharmony existed — and I think you have to wonder when you see this — but it wasn’t obvious and certainly wasn’t poisonous.

Also, no one will owe anyone any moeny if those three leave. Clean break and, for a change, maybe one with some class. I think Steve Dunlap is in a tricky spot, though. A new defensive coordinator isn’t obligated to keep him. At least one possible replacement is a safeties coach … though Dunlap can coach anywhere on that side of the ball. Still, he’s the red sock in the wash right now.

I say this because it looks like Joe DeForest is getting the full-court press by Dana Holgorsen. It makes a lot of sense with regard to the Texas connections and the special teams mastery. First thing I heard after the Orange Bowl was Holgorsen looking for a former defensive coordinator. A lot of people jumped at Brian Stewart, but I was told way back then that that wasn’t it … and those two never worked together at Houston.  I guess the name was DeForest.  Not sure where people are getting Zac Spatival’s name from, though I suppose he could be a cornerbacks coach here.

That’s not up to Jake Spavital or even Dana Holgorsen, but whoever the new defensive coordinator is (Wait! If we’ve learned nothing, we have to say this) … if things don’t change overnight.
