WVU v.Georgetown: Can these guys get to 70?

Starting here in just a few moments and it occurs to me no one on this WVU team has ever lost to Georgetown.

Serious, check the box score from the last time the Hoyas beat the Mountaineers. That’s pretty impressive. A win today against the 9th-ranked Hoyas gives WVU five in a row in the series, which has never happened in the Big East and only happened once ever between these two schools. That was way back in 1933-35.

Hell, put an asterisk on that one. The first game in that five-game streak wasn’t a game at all.

Some fun with 70: WVU under Bob Huggins is 83-12 when it scores 70 or more points and has won 60 of the past 69 such games. The Hoyas, meanwhile, have allowed 70 or more just twice — 88 in a three-point win in overtime in November against Memphis and 70 in a three-point win Wednesday against Marquette.

Here we go …

12:06: Both teams miss close shots early, Kilicli turns it over with an offensive foul and gets the up-and-under from Henry Sims, but Keaton Miles swoops in on help defense and swats it. He’s then called for a foul guarding a Hollis Thompson jumper and Thompson makes two free throws to get the scoreboard working.

12:08: Sims extends and hits a jumper and WVU loses the ball on its third turnover of the game and the second in the backcourt. Hinds committed the second and takes a seat next to Huggins. Hoyas lead 4-0 and Sims is an interesting player. We’ve already seen the inside and the outside game, but he’s also the only Big East player in the top 15 in blocked shots and assists.

12:09: Truck makes a 3, WVU gets a stop and Truck misses a 3.

12:10: Truck misses another 3, but Miles got the rebound. After Kilicli misses down low, Georgetown runs, but Miles gets a steal in transition. Nice start for him.

12:11: Browne with a tricky floater in the lane for a 5-4 lead and then a 30-foot overhead pass to Jones for a layup.

12:13: Mike Carey get the mid-court treatment for 500 victories. Standing ovation and he’s joined by Oliver Luck in a suit and Jim Clements.

12:15: By the way, Luck goes back to his seat and sits next to the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft.

12:17: Miles hasn’t scored. He missed a jumper. But  he’s playing pretty well and more or less justifying his spot on the floor. His fired a pass inside to Kilicli for an easy two and then skipped a pass across the floor to Truck, who slipped the defense and went left to Jones for an easy jumper. Nice work.

12:19: Georgetown finally pulls the trigger on a backdoor pass and 6-8 Thompson beats “6-2” Truck for an and-one. It’s 11-8 at the under-12 timeout. The Hoyas are 3-for-10 with five turnovers.

12:23: Aaron Brown is in and he’s got a lot of tape on his right hand. Let’s watch his shot.

12:26: … well. Against the shotclock and KJ drives from the 3-point line on the left side and lays it in on the right side for a 13-11 lead. Can’t say I’ve seen him do that before.

12:29: Boy, WVU is having just a terrible time against a tall press. And as shaky as the guards are, they’re not getting any help from the forwards, who need to run up and make themselves available.

12:31: First shot for the left-handed Brown goes wide, but he makes a layup in transition on the next possession, It’s 19-17 with 6:35 to go.

12:37: Something the Mountaineers are a lot better at than they were before — and, really, since the last time I saw them live Dec. 19 — is getting the ball to KJ. He gets it a lot and often where he wants it. The Mountaineers lead 23-18 with 5:25 to go after Truck was fouled shooting a 3 and made 1 of 3 at the line.

12:38: Nique Rutledge fell for a Georgetown play and took himself out of the lane to allow a layup. WVU misses and Georgetown runs for a basket to make it a one-point game.

12:39: And Rutledge and Miles play a two-man game and Miles misses everything on a 3. He’s 0-for-7 this year.

12:40: 7NA! Jones and Rutledge make layups on back-to-back possessions and JT3 needs a moment. WVU leads 27-22.

12:42: I like Jason Clark a lot. Have for years. He’s the leading scorer and a very good 3-point shooter who had 26 Wednesday against Marquette. He’s 1-for-2 for two points today.

12:45: Out of an officials’ timeout, Huggins plays Hinds, Browne, Nique, Noreen and Miles. Would you believe there was a shotclock violation.

12:46: Miles fouls Thompson as Thompson makes a 3. He misses the free throw and WVU leads 27-25.

12:47: Browne carries the ball and takes a seat and the Hoyas tie the score.

12:48: Smart play by Truck. Banks in a jumper on the third shot of a possession and does it to get a two-for-one.

12:48: Georgetown misses, WVU runs and Truck misses a, shall we say, contested layup. The Hoyas miss at the buzzer and the Mountaineers are up 29-27 at the half. To answer the title … no.

12:49: Also, no halftime celebration for the Orange Bowl.

1:07: I was marveling the way Truck was guarding Clark, but then Clark got behind Truck for a backdoor layup and Truck stopped and blistered Miles, who screwed it up. Clark then steals and dunks to tie the score 31-31.

1:09: Truck misses a 3 (he’s 2-for-10) but Turk kinda expected it and flew in unopposed for a dunk. The crowd is buzzing and Turk forces a turnover. Circle it!

1:14: Hilarious. Truck shoots and misses, Miles flies and dunks.

1:18: Truck steals and dunks! He’s 6-2!

1:18: Almost a big moment. Georgetown miss, Hinds clicks a 30-foot pass and it skips of Kilicli’s hands. And Truck’s defense is really, really bothering Clark.

1:20: I’ve watched this closely. I’ve stretched my imagination. I have no idea how Georgetown became a top-10 team. A KJ 3 gives WVU a 44-37 lead over this top-10 team. That makes Kevin 6 for his last 30 from 3.

1:26: Back-to-back possessions, Georgetown draws a block on Kilicli when Sims was driving and then a foul on Brown when Thomas was driving. No free throws? Nique takes a charge on one end and then comes back after a WVU turnover to block and discourage some shots before he’s called for a foul on the fourth attempt. Hoyas really struggling to get to the basket and I sense Rutledge is going to do something really good soon. We’re trending that way.

1:29: Browne makes two free throws (!) and WVU is in the bonus for the final 9:43. The Mountaineers have committed just four fouls and lead 46-41.

1:29: Browne in transition finds Brown, who fakes, steps left and drains a 3. Eight point lead … largest of the game.

1:31: Browne jab steps a defender behind a screen, steps back and makes a jumper. He’s a very smart player. JT3 takes another timeout. They’ve been floating around that minus-six, minus-eight range a while now. Hard to hang around there on the road.

1:40: Pretty blatant foul on Sims as he lunches on Truck’s shot fake. I don’t think Clougherty was going to call is until he saw the shot miss everything, though. Truck makes two free throws and WVU is again up eight, 53-45. Hoyas need to make a move.

1:42: Uhoh. Georgetown misses a the front of a one-and-one and Truck makes a 3. Hoyas get a second-chance basket and JT3 calls a timeout down 56-47. Just told Dave Hickman Michael Stephens has been very quiet.

1:43: Browne, Hinds, Truck, Nique and KJ for WVU.

1:44: WVU turnover, Hoyas dunk. Truck basket, Rutledge draws a foul and them makes a free throw and just misses the second.

1:47: Hinds makes 1 of 2 at the line and suddenly it’s 60-49 and 70 points is likely.

1:48: Rutledge with a steal and people get a little excited as he leads the fast break, but he dishes to Truck, who gets fouled and makes both his free throws. Ball game, right?

1:49: Ooh, bad foul by Rutledge. Reached over Sims as Sims posts up and Sims makes his free throws. Also, since I heard Huggins screaming, I know he calls Rutledge “Dom.” I prefer Nique, sorry.

1:50: Georgetown prefers Nique, too. He travels when he gets lost in the press and a 3 makes it 62-53. Huggins calls a shrewd timeout.

1:52: Dom remains in the game, posts and draws a foul. Sims fouls out of the game and takes  the fastest trip to the bench I can recall.

1:56: Rutledge misses two free throws and he’ll come out nor in favor of Noreen. Meanwhile, Thompson makes a free throw and it’s just a 62-54 lead. Crowd applauds Nique, apparently unaware he just had everything to do with a big momentum swing.

1:58: Truck isn’t guarding Clark and he scores over Browne. WVU turns it over and Georgetown scores. It’s 62-58.

1:58: Browne breaks the pressure and makes a layup. Georgetown misses and Truck breaks the pressure and is fouled. He goes 2-for-2 and gives the Mountaineers a 66-58 lead with 1:53 remaining.

2:02: No one covered Turk on the press break and WVU found him, but the shot was blocked an no foul was called, which worked out great for WVU. Turk didn’t have to shoot free throws. The ball comes   in to Truck, who is fouled and make a pair to end this one.

2:07: Nice recovery by WVU. A 12 point  lead shrinks to just four, but WVU scores 12 of the next 16. You do wonder if that happens on the road, but today, you don’t care. Final: 74-62. Huggins has won 5 of 9 against top 10 teams. He started 2-11 against top 10 teams at his alma mater.
