The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Now hear this

At 9:37 Tuesday night, WVU released this statement:

“Contrary to media reports, there is no press conference scheduled for Wednesday concerning WVU’s athletic conference affiliation. There are no further comments at this time.”

That’s not an ordinary action from WVU, which usually lets reports and reporters sort things out by themselves. And this doesn’t alter anything about WVU’s move, except that, barring another big change, there will be nothing tomorrow.

I say “another big change” because we at the Daily Mail were told the Big 12 would be on campus and the conference and WVU were planning a press conference tomorrow. And I found this to be particularly interesting: It was actually supposed to be at 3 o’clock! For the first time maybe ever, the 3 o’clock press conference would actually happen. I teach a class Wednesday nights at 6 p.m. and was told I wouldn’t need to cancel because I’d have plenty of time to write.

My guess — and that’s all I have at this hour — is that the Big 12 is waiting on Missouri. I think the Big 12 knows what Missouri is doing (leaving) and is letting Missouri and the SEC handle it on their own. Again, same as Texas A&M. Could be the World Series. Could be the Missouri v. Texas A&M game Saturday. Could be Brady Deaton enjoying the warmth of the spotlight. Whatever the case, there was a move to have the announcement tomorrow and that is no more because, I would guess, there are things the Big 12 couldn’t or wouldn’t want to answer, or to be misleading about, relative to Missouri, its decision and its future.

And there’s also this mind bottling scenario: What if Missouri is staying? Maybe the Big 12 completed that Hail Mary and WVU, which is in no matter what, is No. 11. Now the Big 12 needs — imagine this — a 12th team. Perhaps Louisville put on a pissed off, full court press today and gave everyone cause for pause.

Whatever the case, time will tell, but not tomorrow.
