Tavon Austin has “some sort of work” done on finger

Dana Holgorsen says the injury to WVU’s leading receiver happened early in Saturday’s game and doesn’t think it will keep him out of this weekend’s game at Maryland.

Morning update: I’ve been told there’s more detail to this than what Holgorsen shared — and don’t necessarily hold that against Holgorsen. He literally might not know. Yet. I caught him last night. He didn’t see the players yesterday. Tavon was out Sunday. Holgorsen was to know more today.

This will seem weird, I’m sure, and you may find it hard to believe that we just accept this, but he’s aggressively not concerned with injuries. He didn’t even know what hand Tavon hurt, let alone what finger or what damage was done. Can you buy that? Maybe not, but thus far it seems as though it’s entirely possible. He can’t speak on injuries because he doesn’t occupy himself with them.

Don’t get me wrong. He’s concerned with a player’s well-being and he’ll be brought up to speed and adjust as needed. What I mean is if a kid can’t go, he can’t go and Dana goes to practice worrying about someone and something else. He’s got enough on his plate and he doesn’t know, for example, how to put a finger back together. Dave Kerns does, so Dana delegates to Dave Kerns.

I’m certain he’ll have more on this at today’s press conference. Will it be transparent? Probably not. That, too, is his modus operandi and an ankle is a lower extremity and a collarbone is an upper extremity. Everyone who isn’t out for a significant period of time with a specific injury or surgery is day-to-day with a generic affliction. There’s an element of competition and gamesmanship involved in injuries and the publicizing of them and Holgorsen isn’t going to yield at all to give anyone any degree of an advantage.
