The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Hey! New faces in the crowd. In the foreground is a walk-on running back named D.J. Izon, from Severna, Md., just  south of BWI, I believe. In the background, the third quarterback, Ian Loy. You remember him. Good news for Eu and Paul Millard, though we didn’t see Loy throw at all. Still, they don’t have to wait until the Aug. 22 walk-on tryout to get relief — and, honestly, that tryout is a regular thing and just advertised with a little more organization and aggression this year. New regime and all …

Thursday was Izon’s second day, Loy’s first. They’re both in the five-day acclimatization period. No one I know knows much about Izon — that includes Dana Holgorsen, who was asked about No. 34 Wednesday and admitted as much — and Loy had an anonymous existence previously at WVU, but at least he knows what he signed up for here. And it looks like his arm can handle it …

A twist to start practice today. We got a little “All of the Lights,” and the jumping jacks were just swell, but before that, the slowly building clap that precedes the jumping jacks bothered Mike Joseph, who made everyone slowly build the clap a second time.

Perhaps he wanted them sharp for the practice and not cutting corners — Thursday was the first day of  two-a-days. I’m told Holgorsen’s morning sessions are pretty light, though constructive. Then again, that stays in line with him treating practices prudently. Why, even in a receiver drill, inside receiver coach Shannon Dawson was telling Ivan McCartney to slow it down. “How many times do I got to tell you slow it down, Sticks?” They weren’t supposed to be sprinting through this drill.

Before all of that, more special teams. The field-goal kicking remains frightening. Let’s not name names — there are only two kicking in camp — but one missed two and one had two blocked. The operation remains slow.

Then it was off to the punt teams, and in particular the return groups.

There are a lot of and regulars starters in there: Najee Goode, Casey Vance, Terence Garvin, Tyler Anderson, Will Clarke, J.B. Lageman, Mike Dorsey and Jewone Snow. Keith Tandy and Pat Miller were the guys outside blocking the bullets. Brodrick Jenkins was the return man — Tavon was on the second team, for what it’s worth.

Dorsey was in a green jersey while Darwin Cook and Julian Miller were held out of practice. Not sure why yet.

There were more guests at practice today, most notably Mike Puskar. J.T. Thomas the Elder was there, sporting a Chicago Bears cap and a proud smile. Wonderful guy. He said his son is doing well in Bears camp.

Finally, the video-shooting hasn’t gone very well the past two days because the website I use suddenly won’t comply. Infuriating. This one, though, is my fault. I filmed the requested running back drills sideways.

Evening post-press conference update

Dana Holgorsen knows nothing of this Ian Loy fellow. “I can’t tell you his name, where he came from. I don’t know if he throws left-handed or right-handed,” he said. Low practiced in the morning, though not in pads, so he could be in accordance with NCAA rules. He’s in the beginning of that five-day acclimatization period and can only practice once a day, even if it was the sixth day of practice. “I didn’t know that until this morning,” Holgorsen said.

Also a mystery? Wither Brad Starks? He was again absent from practice. Holgorsen said the receiver has a new injury not related to the shoulder injury suffered in the spring, or to the surgery and recovery it required, and is dealing with a personal matter.

“He was injured before and he came back, but he got hurt three or four days ago and now he’s got some personal stuff,” Holgorsen said.
