Dana Holgorsen will eventually hire an assistant coach to fill the void created by his promotion Friday night. Holgorsen was the offensive coordinator, and will remain that, as well as the quarterbacks coach. That won’t change, either. For starters, Holgorsen wants to have his hands on the player who has his hands on the ball every game. He also has great trust in his graduate assistant, Jake Spavital, who was with Holgorsen at Houston and Oklahoma State and worked closely with the quarterbacks in spring practice. Holgorsen said that arrangement will also remain the same during the season.

So …

… the quarterbacks are spoken for while Bill Bedenbaugh is in charge of the offensive line, Shannon Dawson and Daron Roberts have receivers and Robert Gillespie coaches up the running backs. Someone will be hired to fill a need, but Holgorsen, who said he wants the new hire on campus by Aug. 1, at the latest, isn’t sure what that need is.

“I’m going to think about it and make sure we’re doing the right thing for the future of the program,” he said. “I know one thing: Nothing much is going to change. I don’t think I need to bring a guy in to handle a specific area on the team.”

I know what you’re thinking. If the best candidates, the ones most familiar with Holgorsen and what he likes to do, are mostly already employed elsewhere and Holgorsen doesn’t want to poach from staffs and upset people he likes, then this might get tricky. And there might be a clean solution at WVU.

Obviously, Holgorsen has an affinity for Spavital and the common thought has always been that Spavital would be the one to fill Holgorsen’s spot next year. Holgorsen couldn’t speculate on whether or not Spavital could finish graduate school quickly enough to be in place for the upcoming season — to be fair, he’d just jumped from an airplane.
