The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Quite a finish for the student section this season. Saturday it’s Senior Night Day and what I imagine will be an emotional occasion for Cam, Joe and John Flowers — no offense to Casey Mitchell — as well as the 12,000 or so fans who attend. On top of that, it’s the student section getting another crack at cracking on Rick Pitino after last year’s fiasco.

But first, a warmup in the form of Jim Calhoun, who this crowd has never liked and whose misdeeds have provided ammunition.

Important game here, of course, but really, there aren’t many consequences. I think both teams are in the NCAA field. Both teams are in a four-way tie for seventh. The winner leaves in a tie for seventh and the loser in a tie for eighth — Cincinnati plays at Marquette and they, like WVU and UConn, enter 9-7 in Big East play.

Bring on the fun, everyone.

5:55 pm: In case you’re more of a visual learner than an audio learner, here’s a loose transcript of today’s football luncheon.

6:15: On the whistle: Jim Burr, Michael Stephens and James Breeding.

6:16: It’s true.

6:23: Have you seen these guys a lot? Perhaps. This is Burr’s sixth WVU game (WVU is 2-3), Breeding’s sixth (3-2) and Stephens’s fourth (2-1). Burr and Breeding have worked two WVU games together (WVU is 1-1). Burr was in Lexington last night and Stephens was in Blacksburg.

6:40: Burr has called three UConn games (2-1), Breeding three (1-2) and Stephens four (2-2). Stephens actually did three in four games earlier this season.

7:20: You’re not going to believe me when I tell you this, but the laptop wouldn’t connect to the Internet. We’re beyond “embarassing” now. Should be a lot of fun in Big East and NCAA tournament environments. Fine start by the Mountaineers, though. They led 7-0 and UConn needed a timeout. It’s 15-9 now and WVU is doing an effective job on Walker and a more-than-effective job on the glass.

7:23: “Jim’s a cheater …” Truck has two fouls, by the way. They need to be able to give Mazzulla a break against Kemba, but that takes that away this half. A 3 from Casey makes it 18-9 and WVU is 8-for-16 from the floor.

7:26: Walker has seven points and I’d say WVU is doing a really good job against him. Mazzulla is making it difficult for him to catch the ball or get it back. He’s good enough to make some tough takes, though. Meanwhile, Mazzulla has 11 points (5-for-5) and has made a 3 and two of the 20’8″ jumpers. It’s 20-16 and WVU is winning the rebounding category, 13-7. The Huskies are 6-for-15 with five turnovers.

7:29: Happy birthday, Willie Akers.

7:30: Oh my gosh. I can’t believe my eyes. Turk triple-threats and drives on 7-foot, 255-pound Charles Okwandu for a dunk. My ears are ringing.

7:33: And we’re tied. Kemba’s friends have scored the past nine points including six unanswered. WVU is running very uncertain offense.

7:35: Huggins hits Mr. Stephens with the two handed “Get lost” reaction as we go to the under-4 television timeout. The Huskies are on a 13-4 run and Walker has two points and one shot. It’s 22-22.

7:37: Mazzulla is 5-for-5. His friends are 5-for-20. Kemba is 3-for-6. His friends are 6-for-14.

7:39: Huggins putting on a clinic in casual indifference. Not a fan of the way Oriakhi is being governed. Also, watch Dalton Pepper playing defense. Very unusual what WVU is doing.

7:40: … also, watch Dalton Pepper shoot.

7:42: Credit UConn. Took one in the nose early, but dried its eyes and played right back into it and now leads. The Huskies are 8-for-15 after the 3-for-11 start. WVU is 3-for-11 after it’s 8-for-16 start. How about that for symmetry?

7:44: And Mazzulla ends the half with a 3. WVU leads 28-26. Fun little game.

7:58: UConn was called for two fouls in the first half. WVU was called for seven. That’s entirely hard to believe.

8:03: Oriakhi gets fouls on the first two possessions of the second half.

8:04: Rare time Walker’s been left open. He obliges.

8:06: Anyone want to set an over/under for when Calhoun gets a T?

8:12: Cam making a layup is being masked by Shabazz Napier. I’d take him on my team. UConn just fouled again and Calhoun held up one hand with all five fingers and one hand with none. That’s the foul tally right now.

8:14: And there you have it. Technical foul, Jim Calhoun. And it’s hard to dispute Calhoun has a pretty good case.

8:16: Mitchell is 1-for-4 at the foul line after missing the two on the T. He was 20-for-20 after going 4-for-5 against Georgetown … January 8! That was 24 in a row. I checked.

8:21: Truck is an adventure. We can agree on that. The Mountaineers are 7-for-9 this half, UConn 9-for-15 and has made 7 of 8. The Huskies lead, 47-46.

8:28: Whoa, crowd really into it now. Let’s set a new over/under. When does WVU go to a zone. Bonus if you get the right zone, too.

8:37: Truck and Turk dominate a possession. Truck misses two shots amid heckles and Turk rebounds both and earns a foul on the second. UConn played the zone card first, if you’re keeping score at home.

8:40: Just 4:38 remains and John Flowers goes 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. WVU leads 54-51 and is 9-for-16 at the line.

8:41: The Coliseum may not have been louder this entire season than it was right there and that was directed at Stephens, who did not think Joe Mazzulla’s perfectly acceptable box out was perfectly acceptable. UConn kicks an inbound play — they matter! — and Kilicli scores. Huskies need a timeout down 56-51 with 3:48 to go.

8:48: No one for UConn not names Shabazz or Kemba attempted  a shot from 8:03 to 3:32 on the game clock.

8:50: Kevin Jones has played tremendously well tonight and played even harder. Fans filing out, believe it or not, from the lower level. Side effect from the parking, I’m sure.

8:52: Truck goes 1-for-2 at the foul line and it’s 59-53 with 1:19 to go. Will the students rush the floor? Will WVU give away this game?

8:53: Truck makes four in a row to make it 63-53 and here comes an overrated chant. Great, great crowd tonight practically from start to finish.

8:55: Truck makes two more and it’s a 9-0 run to end the game before Walker makes a 3. Final score: 65-56 and WVU is in a tie for seventh
