The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Welcome back, black

The Old Gold and Blue will be back in black today and for the first time this season. WVU was 4-1 in the all-blacks last season. The loss? Duke in the Final Four.

Sorrry. My bad. Really.

1:22 pm:  On the mic today: Justin Kutcher and Timmy O’Toole.

2:04:  Cam Thoroughman with the start. On the whistles: Ed Corbett, Mike Stephens and Joe Lindsay. The USF women’s team, which played and lost to WVU yesterday, is seated behind the men’s bench.

2:08: Kevin Jones misses from a foot away and then commits his second foul on defense. To the bench with 16:29 to go in the half.

2:17: Listless crowd and it’s 12-10. Gus Gilchrist has six points for USF despite some pretty tight, pretty good defense by Cam. The Mountaineers are 6-for-11 from inside the 3-point line and 0-for-3 outside of it. Five offensive rebounds and six second-chance points helping WVU, which has just one turnover.

2:19: … and WVU turns it over out of the timeout.

2:23: Cam! Blocks what looked to be an uncontested dunk and then saved the rebound … but with such velocity it bounced off Truck’s knee and out of bounds. The listless crowd develops a pulse. Kevin Jones returns with 9:09 left.

2:27: There might be something to having Kilicli come in off the bench. Six points and five rebounds already and he’s been similarly effective in every one of the games he hasn’t started. Looks calm and confident. USF, meanwhile, has shaky guard play and the bigs look like they can’t stand it.

2:36: Wellington Smith is in the building. His seat  is slightly better than yours. WVU up 23-14 with 10 second-chance points.

2:40: USF has 14 points with 1:54 left in the first half. And I wouldn’t say WVU’s defense has been that good. The Bulls have eight offensive rebounds, but are 6-for-26 shooting and have turned it over nine times.

2:58: There’s a team shooting 13-for-35 (37.1 percent) from the floor and 1-for-7 from 3-point range. It has four assists and five turnovers and its second-leading scorer picked up two fouls early. That team is WVU and that team leads 27-16 at the half.

3:02: WVU pulls a WVU and falls down at the start of the second half. Huggins calls a timeout after 76 seconds of mostly shoulder shrugs. And the Coliseum would like to teach you how to Dougie.

3:18: Cam! Sets a screen on a Mitchell 3 and then a pass to Truck on a back-cut for a layup. Then he fouls 25 feet from the basket. Give and take. WVU has a 9-0 run to go up 36-20. USF had its moment.

3:24: An 87-second possession for WVU ends with Mazzulla gettinghis first contribution of the game, an assist to Jones for a one-handed dunk.

3:39: USF can make two free throws and make it an 11-point game with 4:15 to go. Gilchrist makes both, but Anthony Crater steps in the lane on the second and the Bulls lose the point. It’s 47-35 with 4:04 to go as Kilicli misses the front end of a one-and-one. .
