Meghan Lewis strikes back

WVU’s women’s soccer team — criminally underpublicized, by the way … and yes, I’m one to blame — won its 12th straight match Sunday and its second Big East Tournament title.

You’d like to say the Mountaineers are without a blemish since a scoreless draw Sept. 26 against Sunday’s victim, USF, but Meghan Lewis would probably disagree.

She was smacked in the face during play near the goal in the first half and needed four stitches before she returned.

And good for WVU that she did. Lewis scored the title-winner in the 82nd minute.

“What a warrior,” said West Virginia head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown of Lewis. “She wasn’t going to give in to anything today.

“Everybody deserves a game-winner, but no one more important than Meghan Lewis.”

Bry McCarthy’s corner kick went into the box before it was punched out by USF goalkeeper Nicole McClure.

There, WVU forward Blake Miller headed the ball down where Lewis was there to settle and turn, shooting the ball into the back of the net to give the Mountaineers their first Big East Title since 2007.

“It’s unreal. I’m speechless. I can’t explain this feeling,” said Lewis, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. “I was in the right spot at the right time. Blake headed it down, and I just turned and shot and was just hoping it would go in.”

No other WVU program has two Big East tournament titles. These Mountaineers, who also won the tournament in 2007 after championship game losses in 2001 and 2002, possess the very competitive Big East’s automatic bid to what is now an 11th straight NCAA Tournament.

Quite likely, the team will host a first-round game Friday, same day as the season-openers for men’s and women’s basketball, which is criminally cruel.

Then again, who knows? WVU’s win streak is actually only the fifth-longest in the nation today and the team was ranked just No. 22 entering the game. Soccer …
