Regarding Casey Mitchell

I’m going to have to assume, based on tweets from Kevin Jones and John Flowers, that Jonnie West is back with the basketball team. (It feels very strange to be getting news this way, but if they open the window …)

Many have assumed his return means Casey Mitchell is no more and his suspension was a precursor to dismissal. One isn’t linked with the other and Mitchell remains with the team.

WVU had an available scholarship since David Nyarsuk didn’t enroll. Darrious Curry is probably going to get a hardship waiver as well that’ll give WVU another spot. For now, there is definitely one opening. West, who has one season of eligibility remaining, might take that open scholarship.

People often overlook this, or just don’t know, but scholarships are pretty fluid. As Bryan Messerly, WVU’s sports information director for men’s basketball, once explained, scholarships are like apartment leases. One year at a time, renewable for up to four seasons in five years. WVU has 13 apartments it can rent.

With Mitchell suspended, WVU was down a player in practice. Two freshmen are learning the ropes and walk-ons aren’t really able to really help at an advanced rate at this point.

It could be West is a better option to assist. It could be he wanted back — and remember, he’s really tight with Cam Thoroughman and Joe Mazzulla. And if WVU went asking, he may have found it hard to resist.

We’ll find out what happened because that jive turkey man is back. If he changes his mind one more time, no big deal. WVU breaks no rules because, again, West has eligibility remaining.

Mitchell is simply suspended for an indefinite period of time for what I’m told isn’t a completely foreign violation of team rules. He’ll say his rosaries and be back in some period of time.
