Oliver Luck is not into cursory looks

WVU’s new and suddenly busy Director of Athletics plans what will amount to a “multiyear review” to audit and assess operations within the athletic department. Figure part of that is coaching statuses.

Question: Do you foresee any imminent contract extension talks with Bill Stewart, whose contract is up after the 2013 season? In extending his deal, he could recruit high school players now and assure them he’d be there for the length of their playing career at West Virginia.

Answer: I’d rather not answer that. But, I will say, when my son [Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck] was being recruited, in the list of things that he was looking for, that wasn’t even in the top five of his questions, as to the length of the contract for the coach.

That’s twice now Luck has been pressed on the record about Stewart’s contract situation and twice he’s handled his reply about as properly and efficiently — and right in the middle of the road — as can be expected in his position.

Stewart is entering the third year of his original six-year contract. After two seasons, 18 wins and two bowl games, the terms of the contract have not been altered. The length has not been extended.

Not that it hasn’t been a topic.

Several sources said Pastilong spoke with President Jim Clements more than once about extending Stewart’s contract before Pastilong went into an emeritus position July 1. Pastilong also asked the same of his successor, Oliver Luck.

Luck said he has been asked about an extension but wouldn’t say who mentioned it.

“At this point I need to take my time to understand where we are as a program and to let me understand his contract better,” Luck said. “I need to look into it a little more to get a better handle on that and to get a better handle on where we are on a national level.”
