The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

How about two Sweet Sixteens?

WVU’s women’s team hasn’t been so icey since 1992, but has a chance to join their Syracuse-bound compatriots if the third-seeded Mountaineers can beat No. 11 seed San Diego State tonight.

You saw the opponent, right? It’s the Aztecs. Not the Texas team most figured would be on its home floor in the second round. Remember all that hand-wringing when the bracket was revealed and WVU saw it was again poised to play an opponent in its building?

Well WVU — which, I should point out, contended Texas wasn’t guaranteed the second round because SDSU is formidable — took care of its end of the arrangement. The Longhorns did not.

And the Mountaineers, who didn’t play particularly well in the first-round win against Lamar, will still have plenty to deal with at 9:40 tonight. The Aztecs have won six in a row, including their first Mountain West Conference tournament title.

The Mountaineers traveled to Austin expecting to play Texas in a second-round game. A matchup against the Aztecs was hard to grasp at first, but reality quickly took hold.

“Watching San Diego [Sunday] night for a little bit and watching them on film, they’re a great team too,” shooting guard Liz Repella said. “It’s going to be a challenge [today]. They are a really good team.”

Carey was not at the Erwin Center for the start of the SDSUTexas game, but he received a text message from team broadcaster Travis Jones that read: “Maybe we want to play Texas.”

“Then I came here and saw the score,” Carey said. “They are impressive, man. They are athletic. We have a tendency to play better with an athletic team going up and down. I think it’s a good matchup. They are a very good basketball team. They’ve had a great season and have some great players.”
