‘Here we go’

Postgame question posed to Joe Mazzulla: “I have to ask –“

Mazzulla dropped his head and then gave the interrogator a side eye. “Here we go.” He knew it was coming.

So, too, did Da’Sean Butler, who at first resisted. “What are you talking about?”

Well, almost everyone was talking about the videos taken by John Flowers of Mazzulla, Butler and Jonnie West doing mock music videos from a team hotel room Saturday night. They’d spread quickly and wildly across the Internet.

I’m not sure what shocked the participants more: That what they’d done had become such a big deal or that people were making such a big deal of what they’d done.

There’s a difference. These guys are kind of … well, they’re goofy. Let’s leave it there. I don’t think you can watch those videos and disagree. I don’t think you can be around them more than a few minutes without getting at least a small sense of that.

And, to be clear, there’s nothing wrong with it, especially not now when, I suppose, you’re expected to be tight and tiptoeing on egg shells … as opposed to reenacting “Night at the Roxbury” on them.

Neither Butler nor Mazzulla could believe anyone who saw the choreographed lip-synching, side-splitting, tension-killers also saw a bunch of players in the wrong frame of mind.

“It’s the time of our lives,” Mazzulla said. “The championships and the Sweet Sixteens and all that mean everything, but you never forget the memories you have from bus rides and plane rides. I could tell you stories for days about times we almost peed ourselves because we were laughing at how immature we are and how funny we are. Show me a guy who doesn’t have stories from college and I’ll show you a guy who hasn’t lived his life.”

It was pointed out their minds were in such a far-off place that Butler scored 28 points and made 12 of 13 free throws and had the heads-up play of the game with his basket off Cam Thoroughman’s missed free throws and that Mazzulla had contributed mightily to the best performance against Missouri’s press this season.

It was also pointed out that there’d be no apologies, but definitely more videos.

“Me, John, Jonnie and Joe have something now,” Butler said. “We’re going to do something every Saturday now. I know something will open up back in Morgantown. It’s going to be fun. I’m looking forward to it.”
