The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Da’Sean was named the Big East player of the week Sunday — didn’t that e-mail get my attention — as well as first-team all-conference.

Joining Butler were Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody, Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds, Syracuse’s Wes Johnson, South Florida’s Dominique Jones and Georgetown’s Greg Monroe. Butler, Harangody, Reynolds and Monroe were on the preseason all-conference team.

Now the fun part. One of those six will be named conference player of the year Tuesday.

No offense to Monroe or Jones, but neither is winning. Now it’s between Butler, Reynolds, Harangody and Johnson. Each has his warts.

We know of Butler’s shooting and free-throw woes, but he did finish on a fine note — the finest among the four — with Saturday’s game. He was 3-for-10, but he made big shots at the end of regulation and overtime, made 13 of 14 free-throw attempts and added 10 rebounds to his 21 points.

Trouble is, coaches were asked to submit ballots by Friday.

Reynolds hasn’t shot it very well lately and Villanova is 4-5 since starting 9-0 in the Big East. Harangody is the league’s top scorer, but missed five games before returning Saturday with five points in 11 rebounds … and I wonder if the fact Notre Dame did very well without him hurts. Johnson was an immediate impact for Syracuse, but he, too had struggled offensively (bad hand) at the end. The possibility of he and Andy Rautins splitting votes and creating an opening for someone else went out the window when Rautins made the second team.
