The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Let’s hear it for hotel WiFi!

Or not. But what about the WVU women’s team? Almost imperceptibly, they’re ranked No. 9/8 nationally with a 23-3 record after last night’s win.

Rutgers (15-12) is not Rutgers this season. The reputation doesn’t match the reality, though the Scarlet Knights had won three in a row and they’re always going to be pretty good. And last night they were — chasing away nearly all of a 13-point deficit in the second half — but it wasn’t enough and a nice-enough crowd of 1,318 and some hopping bars (I’m told) delighted in Mike Carey’s 100th win at the Coliseum.

“What Mike Carey has done, putting this team in the Top 10, is nothing short of incredible,” Stringer began.

Surely his is a name that will get some consideration for end-of-the-year awards, though that Auriemma guy might nab some votes, too. If you haven’t already — and the hunch is that judging by crowds, buzz, email and Saturday’s pink success, maybe you have — it’s probably time to start not just including this team in your March plans, but really wondering how far it can go.

Consider the losses are on the road against N0. 1 UConn, No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 7 Ohio State. Combined record: 73-4.

“Obviously, they have the right disposition and they believe in each other,” Stringer noted. “Coach Carey should be given all the credit, he and his staff. It’s not like there’s a bunch of All-Americans there.”

Sometimes you don’t need talent, but you can survive and thrive on coaching and chemistry. And it never hurts to have some frickin’ ballers.
