The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

WVU No. 8 in AP, No. 8 in coaches’ poll

Not much slippage for an 0-2 week and with both games on ESPN, no less. Respect!

Or ragamuffins? It’s such a strange year in the poll. Nos. 1-3 are pretty clear, nut then Nos. 4-12 are virtually interchangeable — though, OK, New Mexico may be a stretch despite nine wins after an 0-2 start in the Mountain West and a 5-0 mark against ranked teams.

I suppose that’s the point, though. Would you frame your bracket around many of those teams? Beyond that top three, it’s quite open and it shows.

WVU was voted anywhere between 6 and 14. Richmond, which hasn’t been in the poll for 24 years and is winning in a drab Atlantic 10, was between 19 and unranked. And that’s nothing, by comparison. Pitt was between 10 and unranked, Texas between 9 and unranked.

For record-keeping purposes, the Big East has four in the top 10 and five in the top 20. I was about to make a point for WVU in which I highlighted how the Mountaineers are No. 8, but No. 3 in the Big East … until I saw Georgetown, which is No. 10 and fifth in the Big East.

Turns out, that’s not quite as impressive or as unprecedented as you might think.
