Football assistant Big East’s best recruiter

… and maybe not who you’d think. It was Chris Beatty who last week told meLonnie Galloway was put in charge of Doc Holliday’s vacated territory in Florida. It was Galloway who was labeled the Big East’s best by ESPN.com.

The Mountaineers lost ace recruiter Doc Holliday to Marshall and all of his deep connections to South Florida, but Galloway was able to land four-star receiver Ivan McCartney(Miramar, Fla./Miramar) late in the process over the hometown Miami Hurricanes and others. Throw in Georgia sleeper Quantavious Leslie(Hogansville, Ga./Calloway) and junior college linebacker Bruce Irvin (Stone Mountain, Ga./Mt. San Antonio College), and Galloway had an impressive three-man haul for the top class in the Big East.

This is interesting as a buzz begins to build about Bill Stewart’s March 3 media gathering to talk about new duties on his coaching staff. Obviously, WVU needs someone to hear up recruiting. Perhaps it’s two people? Co-directors, much like what is expected to be co-coordinators of special teams with Stewart taking a step aside to make room for new hire Dave McMichael.

Beatty and Galloway, who mourned the passing of his mother during the recruiting rush, are now in charge of the two most important areas for WVU recruiting. Given the success this year with key players from Texas, Tennessee and Georgia, there’s hope to expand the reach into areas like Houston and Memphis and Atlanta, where Galloway has been a presence since he was hired.
