WVU women survive jinx, beat Pitt

Time to buy a little stock and have a little faith in WVU’s women’s team. Those Mountaineers put their best 14-game start in school history and longest winning streak in 18 years on the line last night and despite a brazen attempt to highlight it all that usually ends up interrupting that momenth, nationally ranked WVU prevailed against Pitt.

Oh, it looked as if it would not end that way. WVU’s best players was not her best in the first half and it was a three-point deficit at halftime to a team that won both of last year’s games and was ranked most of this seasn before falling out this week.

So how did WVU get the win? That best player — Liz Repella — played her best and drew priceless praise from Pitt’s priceless coach, Agnus Berenato.

“She’s a frickin’ baller,” she said.

And somehow, it came across as she meant it, as a term of endearment.

Repella had just ruined the night for Beranato’s team, rebounding from the first half from hell in which she went 0 for 8 from the field and was held scoreless, to pour in 16 second-half points and lead WVU to a thrilling 63-59 victory over its arch rival.
