The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Far be it from me to say J.B. will play …

… but it looks to me as if WVU’s starting quarterback will be the starting quarterback Saturday. This from Bill Stewart, via sports information, this morning:

“Jarrett Brown practiced both Tuesday and Wednesday and did well … We will continue to evaluate him the remainder of the week and make the decision about his status on Saturday morning.”

And this from Stewart’s Tuesday press conference:

“If he gets through (practice) Tuesday well, he’s got to get through Wednesday even better.”

Voila!

OK, OK, that’s putting words in Stew’s mouth and nowhere does he say or even insinuate J.B. will start. Of course, there’s gamesmanship involved and you not only want UConn to remain uncertain, but you need Geno Smith to prepare as if his starting is still a possibility.

That said, it looks good for J.B. The fact he was allowed to go home and rest on his own Saturday night and wasn’t on supervised/interrupted sleep was a good sign. If you get your brain banged really badly, you’re not supposed to sleep more than three or so hours at a time.

Then we were told he’d experienced neither nausea nor headaches in the hours and days to follow. Plus two.

And, even better, this is the first concussion of his career. Plus three!

True, they’re easier to acquire, especially shortly after an incident, but maybe the kid just got knocked out. There’s a difference. Perhaps that’s what we’re seeing here.

Irregardless, it’s a quick and fortuitous turnaround for the Mountaineers and especially for J.B., who if nothing else took this all in stride and with a smile.

“When I was thinking to get down is when I got hurt,” Brown said. “That’s crazy. If I would have just lowered my shoulder and gone forward, I probably wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”

Mullen might beg to differ, but the point remains Brown indeed suffered a concussion when Marshall defenders Ashton Hall and Brandon Burns converged on Brown and the quarterback’s helmet was sandwiched between the other two.

“I was thinking to get down and I didn’t want to take a hit,” Brown said. “It actually came from out of my vision, so that was just a freak accident. Taking two helmets to the head? From both sides? Come on.”
