The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

He’s fast, but who is that?

I give you a reason today to think about Usain Bolt’s absurd world record performance Sunday. WVU has a Jamaican on its team and just about everyone — he is the exception — think he’s the fastest linebacker, which is a significant distinction given the speed the Mountaineers have at that position.

It is, at that spot, like being dubbed “World’s Fastest Man.”

Trouble is, Ovid Goulbourne has not yet been able to distinguish himself because of injuries … which is apropos because he was somewhat indistinguishable in the past.

While the area Goulbourne is from is more Penn State territory than anything else, Kirelawich didn’t have a great problem recruiting him, although it wasn’t because West Virginia’s reputation had grown to the point where it challenges Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions.

Goulbourne says it was his freshman year, maybe sophomore, at Easton High when he became aware of WVU.

“WVU had Avon Cobourne at running back then,” he said. “Some of the kids asked me if I was related to him.”

A big-time running back in Easton, Pa., he was lured to WVU to play linebacker. Hamstrings and shoulders have been his enemies, but when he’s been healthy, he’s been productive. He’s played quite a bit of special teams in his career and was very busy — 52 plays — and very good at Colorado last year.

Now, though, he’s as healthy as ever and better able to prevent injury since he’s not recovering from one. There’s a difference there and he’s excited about it.

When the Mountaineers scrimmaged Saturday, he was the second-team weak side linebacker behind J.T. Thomas. When WVU was looking for speed to pressure the QB, Goulbourne was on the field.

Like any other linebacker who’s been at WVU for some amount of time, Goulbourne can play multiple positions, which could work really well for the defense. Put Thomas, Reed Williams and Goulbourne on the field and watch out.
