The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Democracy at its finest

Perhaps you’ve never been to Charleston — hell, I’ve only been there a few times and I work for a newspaper there — but there’s a rather busy, sometimes difficult-to-navigate bridge that takes cars from I-64 toward and away from downtown Charleston. They say 100,000 or so cars a day cross it.

Well, because it’s so important and because this is, after all, West By God Virginia, it must be painted and it must be painted blue or green … and by that, I mean WVU blue or Marshall green. There’s actually an online poll to pick which one. Really. I’m serious.

True, true, red, gray and light blue are also options, but that’s not happening. The people are speaking and they want their bridge dark blue or green and nothing else.

As of late last week, dark blue led green 45,484 to 36,360 votes. Those two colors, apparently representative of the Mountaineers and Thundering Herd, have traded the top spot in the poll results since the contest opened in June.

The other three choices have as much chance of catching up as Rich Rodriguez has of returning to Morgantown for a ticker-tape parade.

Hey-oh! How we’ll miss Jake Stump at the Daily Mail. Anyhow, WVU’s supporters are making a strong move after falling behind Marshall recently.

One post on www.themountaineernation.com read, “There is an online contest to determine the color of the big Interstate bridge in Charleston. Right now Marshall green is winning over WVU blue!

“Tell your friends! I see that bridge every day and couldn’t stand to see it green instead of navy!”

Marshall’s backers are wondering if they might cry foul.

Conspiracies are even considered, like this post at www.herdnation.comin June: “Still lots of time left to vote but green is still in the lead. Friend of mine said he has been voting and the counter hasn’t been changing on the green bridge. Think there is any chance the governor would want to control this vote? Would be easy to fix since the state government runs it.”

I knew someone would go there. I just knew it.

I’m guessing painting one side dark blue and the other green would be out of the question because that’d be a 1-for-1 deal. Perhaps dark blue gets two-thirds and green gets one-third? Dark blue five-sevenths and green two-sevenths?
