Extended edition today because I’m leaving for The Tournament … and yet something’s missing. Oh, yeah, Alex Ruoff.

Outside of an injury or some other unique and extenuating circumstance, very rarely do I feel for someone I’m covering. That said, that was was really tough to watch Saturday night.

The emotion before the game when he was introduced on Senior Night managed to rival the Gansey-Beilein-Herber-Pittsnogle-Durisseau-Collins Senior Night in 2006. Emotion remained inside a juiced Coliseum, but the exact emotions swung wildly throughout. Early, though, you could tell this wasn’t going to have a happy ending and after Ruoff came up empty on two drives near the start, I scribbled in the notebook to check Friday’s story.

“I’ll definitely be proud of it if I do get it, but I don’t want to be selfish about it. I don’t want to bring a lot of attention to the record,” he said. “It’s something I’ll be proud of at the end of the season, but if I don’t hit one Saturday, that won’t mean anything to me.”

Yikes. What stood out to me was when Alex has had bad games, he’s still played well. He gets assists or plays defense or facilitates the offense. Not only was he not making shots, but he wasn’t taking them, he wasn’t passing, he wasn’t holding onto the ball and, worst off, he wasn’t playing. It happens, but when it happens to someone who’s as good as the touching tributes suggested, it’s awkward and unfortunate.

So what defines Mr. Ruoff? The entire 123 games, the 123rd or what follows?
