Cause for pause or applause?

E-mail time … and this seems to be a pretty popular topic:

Hey Mike.

Burning question.

Why would Coach Stewart tell the “world” some of the secret success’s they had against Auburn (signals) and then why would you want to print that for everyone to see and know.

I know it makes for great print, and I like “being in the know”.  It makes it fun, but man, I don’t think I would let anyone in on what I’m doing.

What do you think?

Why would Coach Stew let that out?

These are the things that give me great pause.

Fair enough. Let me free myself of guilt first. I noticed what was going on pretty early in the game — and I wasn’t alone — and I felt the need to share that. Seemed like not only a pretty good tactic, but a pretty significant contribution to the victory. That had to be highlighted.

As for Stewart, well, he does have a way of spilling his beans — squib kicks, game plans, etc. — but he’s coy about other things, especially injuries.

Sometimes he gets rolling, probably loses his footing a little bit and then explains things you’d rather see him keep private. I don’t think it’s really put WVU at a competitive disadvantage. If UConn is any good, it’ll watch the Auburn tape and see the dummy signal and the real signal. If the Huskies don’t notice that and needed Stewart to point it out … well, it’s not even worth continuing this point. If the coaches couldn’t spot that, the Huskies wouldn’t be 6-2.

To be fair, there have been many times this season when Stewart has overflowed, realized what was happening and then said, “Please don’t print that.” Think of what the world could know.

He’s very talkative, but he’s no dummy. There have been many other times when he just won’t answer a question. For example, after Stewart raved about the success of the unusually fast no-huddle offense and the team’s conditioning, I asked Sunday if WVU could perhaps use it regularly. If you’ve found something you’re good at, why not do it more often? I got a pretty vague reply. The question was re-worded. The nature of the reply was not. That seemed intentional … and that’s fine for me and probably encouraging for you.

As for this case, he simply pulled a fast one on an SEC team — one that eventually caught on — and there is a possibility Stewart is planting the seeds for future chicanery.
