The Sock 'Em, Bust 'Em Board Because that's our custom

Talking points

…from the weekend that was. For your use in elevator rides, trips to the water cooler and other awkward moments on a Monday. Obviously, an all-football edition…

-WVU has some questions, but plenty of time as camp opens.

– There seems to be a belief WVU’s receivers are as good as they’ve been in many, many years and there’s a difference-maker on the outside.

– Pat Liebig, a good kid who’s in a bad predicament, should find out soon whether he’ll be allowed to play or not this season.

–  One of a few first-year players who did not show up, freshman J.J. Dorsey got tangled up in homesickness before his eligibility fell apart.

– The latter part of the headline — and the subsequent zinger included in the ending quote — made me realize why I kind of miss all that drama. Seriously, she had to release a statement.

Now, about practice…

Practices were, as best as we could tell in the two total hours we were allowed to observe, fun. Players seemed very into it and the coaches probably had as much fun as anyone else. The mood was light, but not carefree — they’re doing serious work, that much you can already tell.

Here are the five major storylines that developed over the weekend:

1) Brandon Hogan’s move from slot receiver to cornerback might be a permanent one. If so, look for Dorrell Jalloh to move move from the outside to the slot and replace Hogan at the offensive position.

2) WVU needs someone to do something at tailback. Noel Devine is so good it’s actually working against the other players, who just match what he does, though, to be fair, the most credible ones are freshmen and junior college transfers.

3) Linebacker is the least of anyone’s worries. Though he’s not hitting, Reed Williams is flying around the field and says he continues to stay ahead of the rehabilitation schedule.

4) WVU only has three quarterbacks practicing. One is true freshman Coley White, meaning if big brother gets dinged up at all, as he has the past two seasons, little brother is now the backup.

5) Maybe it’s nothing or just a case of the head coach having a little fun, but Bill Stewart has raved about kicker/punter Pat McAfee and said Sunday night “his hands will be involved” this season. He left it at that.

Finally, take a look at some of the action — including Stewart flashing his affection for USF! — and feel free to fire away with whatever questions you have. I’ll try to answer them all in the comments.
