Flash: Alexander runs fast, too

The NBA released the top secret results of the predraft camp physical evaluations a little bit ago and we learned what we suspected: Joe Alexander was doing work.

The wingspan and standing reach raised an eyebrow and the bench press was better than guys named Beasley, Mayo, Love, Padgett, Lopez, Jordan … OK, better than everyone in the camp but Xavier’s Josh Duncan. What impressed me — and, for sure, teams like Golden State, Phoenix, Toronto and others who like to run — was the three-quarters court sprint. Alexander did it in 2.99 seconds and only Arkansas’ Sonny Weems was faster — and by just 0.03 seconds.

By the way, John Riek was there and the 7-2 center had the biggest wingspan at 7-8 3/4 inches. He didn’t record a standing reach because, as DraftExpress.com states, “Probably too long to believe. We’re told its (sic) 9-10, and certainly believe that.”

This is noteworthy because it’s not definite Riek will be in the draft and he has a loophole that would allow him to go to college if he makes the grade, which is also unclear. There is still interest and at least some interesting speculation.

That has scared off most colleges, but Byrnes said he has “received some calls from coaches in the Big East.”

UConn has been Riek’s most aggressive suitor, but now that Hasheem Thabeet will return for his junior season, Byrnes thinks the Huskies are out of the mix.

“I think Fatah has contacted several Big East programs to see if they would be interested in recruiting John,” Byrnes said. “I don’t think UConn would be interested because of Thabeet.”

Gee, what Big East school might be intrested if a scholarship suddenly became available?
