Welcome to The Varsity Blog

Welcome to The Varsity Blog, a new high school sports blog from the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

We have always taken pride in bringing our readers the best prep sports coverage in West Virginia and now we’re starting the best high school sports blog for the Mountain State’s high school sports fans.

This is an idea that has been swirling around in my head going back to the start of our old WVHuddle site. The Huddle (at least that’s what we called it around the office) eventually transformed from a football-only operation into our current Gazette-Mail Preps site, which covers all prep sports.

Make no mistake, Gazette-Mail Preps isn’t going anywhere. You will still be able to find all of our daily high school sports coverage there. The Varsity Blog will serve as an extension of what Gazette-Mail Preps does and be a place we can share the daily content that appears in print and on the GMPreps site and also a place you find video highlights, interviews, our prep football podcast and any other content beyond what you see in the newspaper.

Both sites served as a great place for all of our high school sports content to live but both were limiting in the sense that they didn’t — and still don’t — always play nice with multimedia. A blog allows us a lot more flexibility in how we attack a topic.

We just put the North-South games in the rear-view mirror and with them the 2016-17 high school sports year. Now felt like a good time to make this idea a reality as the three-week summer practice periods continue around the state and the fall sports season starts to creep up on everyone.

We want to hear from you! Let us know what you like, don’t like or anything else you’d like to see.

If you like what you see, do us a favor and share our posts! We will do what we can to make it as easy as possible for you to share everything we post here, but we need our readers that want to see more of this content to share on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media.
