The PopCult Toybox

mcf14456In this post we’re going to look at some of the cool new action figures and toys that are going to be officially unveiled this weekend at The International Toy Fair in New York. These are some of the biggies with huge collector followings.

The Walking Dead

McFarlane Toys will continue producing 7″ action figures based on The Walking Dead TV Series in their “Color Tops” line. It also looks like their popular 5″ line of TV figures will be be exclusive to Walgreens for the time being. The 5″ comic book series will continue. Let’s quote the press materials about the Color Tops series:

“AMC’s The Walking Dead television series is the most watched drama in basic cable history, shattering records along the way! Season 6 finds Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors seeking refuge in a desolate and post-apocalyptic world and discover there are greater forces to fear than just the walking dead. McFarlane Toys is sitting shotgun for the ride with more amazingly-detailed action figures from AMC’s The Walking Dead.”

The two most-anticipated TWD Color Tops figures are Carl, due out any week now, and Negan, who will show up late this summer.

mcf14425Carl (seen left) features a spectacular likeness of Carl Grimes sculpted from images of the actor Chandler Riggs. The figure features a bandaged head and is sculpted in his outfit from Season 6 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. In addition to that, this figure includes an alternate gunshot wound head, removable bloody poncho and removable hat. It’s a 7″ figure complete with multiple articulation points and a stylized brand specific display base.

The Negan figure (seen above) will feature a stunning likeness of the actor Jeffery Dean Morgan and is sculpted in his iconic outfit from Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Negan has over 14 points of articulation and includes a scaled version of “Lucille”, his barbed-wire baseball bat, as well as a stylized display base. Like all other figures in the Color Tops Collector lineup, Negan is packed in a numbered window box package that is perfect for display in your collection.

At Walgreens, collectors will be able to find th econtinuation of TWD’s TV line of 5″ figures. Rick is in stores now, with Aaron on the way soon, and in July, the first-ever figure of Sasha will turn up.

the-walking-dead-sasha-mcfarlane-figure-231108Sasha’s figure (seen right) will be made in the 5″ scale and she will be depicted in her outfit from Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The likeness of Sasha was taken from 3D scans of actress Sonequa Martin-Green. The figure includes Scoped Assault Rifle, Pistol, and Knife, and is designed with 22+ points of articulation for dynamic posing. The suggested retail price is $15.99, but Walgreens usually discounts their figures.

Funko continues their Mystery Minis line for The Walking Dead with a special “In Memorium” series that was announced last month at the London Toy Fair.  The “In Memoriam” wave of “The Walking Dead” Mystery Minis line (seen below) includes 19 different vinyl toys that each depict characters from the AMC series who have ceased to be. With faded color schemes, the toys look appropriately dead, and characters like Abraham, Glenn, Dale, Shane, Lizzie, Lori, and Merle fill out the series.

AMC’s popular characters: Daryl, Negan and Rick, as well as other survivors of the hit television series, “The Walking Dead” get the bobble-head treatment with a new line of figures from Royal Bobbles.

It does not look like the McFarlane Toys Walking Dead building sets will continue, but we won’t know for sure until this weekend. Greenoight Toys has a 1/18th scale Ford Truck based on the show in the works, and is bound to have more TWD goodness in the pipeline.

fnk14674Rick and Morty

We do know that Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty is hitting the toy world big this year and that includes news McFarlane Toys will be producing construction sets based on this series, plus Funko will release a full line of action figures, including standard 5″ figures, Pop Vinyls, plush and Mystery Minis.

The Rick and Morty Mystery Minis blind bag collection (seen right) includes all of your favorite characters from the popular series on Adult Swim. You can collect all 12 of the highly stylized characters for the ultimate mini Rick and Morty collection. These 2 1/2″ tall vinyl figures feature a cute, friendly, and super-deformed style that fits in well with Funko’s other Mystery Minis.

fnk14681Galactic Plushies (seen left) from Funko give Rick and Morty fans the opportunity to collect character plush with different expressions. Choose among three different facial expressions for both Rick and Morty. A smirking Mr. Poopybutthole is available as well as two options of Mr. Meeseeks.

fnk14676Funko has brought the world of Rick and Morty to life with 5″ fully-posable Action Figures! Each figure is highly articulated and extremely detailed to capture the personality of the character.

Available are Rick (seen right), Morty, Mr. Poopybutthole, Mr. Meeseeks and Birdperson. (Each sold separately) Collect all five and you will be able to build your own Snowball! These are due out in May.

Rick and Morty tears through one exotic science-fiction locale after another, and as a result, there’s plenty of inspiration for McFarlane Toys’ Construction Sets, which have previously recreated scenes from shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.

nytf-reel-cards-rickmorty-rev4Rick’s lab in the Smith Family Garage will be one such set, but there will also be some based on more out-there locales, such as Scary Terry’s Boiler Room and the Gromflam Base Science Lab. Since all McFarlane sets are compatible with each other, fans will also be able to mix and match characters from different settings.

“With how unpredictable and off-the-wall Rick and Morty can be, it’s only fitting that we add it into our construction line,” company owner Todd McFarlane said in a statement. “Fans can grab these sets and instantly become just as creative, making up their own insane scenes.”

nec12951Weird Al

NECA has announced their second clothed “ReMego” action figure tribute to legendary musician “Weird Al” Yankovic. Celebrate some of his most iconic song parodies, starting with “White and Nerdy,” which was Al’s first single to go Platinum, selling more than a million copies. The figure wears fabric clothing based on the music video and features all new head and hand sculpts. It’s fully poseable and stands 8″ tall. Comes in collector-friendly window box packaging.

To reiterate, it’s based on Weird Al’s first single to go Platinum, with clothing as seen in the music video. The figure stands 8″ tall and fully poseable and should hit stores in June, with a retail price around $25.

South Park

There’s no need to go all the way down to South Park to have yourself a time. South Park is coming to toy stores. The long-running Comedy Central cartoon series, currently in its third decade on the air, is partnering with McFarlane Toys for a new line of South Park-themed construction sets. Available in August 2017, these sets re-create scenes from both the TV show (like Mr. Garrison’s classroom) and the upcoming video game, South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

All of your favorite characters are present and accounted for as portable figures, and the sets themselves are built with plastic pieces that are compatible with other McFarlane brand lines. So if you want to have the kids from South Park cross over with Rick and Morty, Five Nights at Freddy’s or The Walking Dead, go nuts. The South Park Construction Sets from McFarlane Toys will be available in August 2017. Prices ranges from $7.99 to $34.99.
